First Day of Rehab on the Knee

I have only been four days removed from my knee surgery, but considering I have yet to take any of the pain meds, I felt I was doing really well and healing nicely. I even started my pre-rehab stretches a half a day early, and have felt really good about how the knee felt overall. So I was excited to get the official rehab started today. I spent yesterday moving around the house without the aid of crutches, but took them with me today because it was raining and I didn't want to take any chances walking in the rain on a bad knee. But when I got inside the rehab center I started limping along without the aid of crutches. The injury rehab specialist noticed right away and commented on it, telling me that for injuries like mine I shouldn't be able to walk without crutches for at least another week. He was also very surprised when I told him that I was not in any pain. Of course, that all changed when he started putting me through the exercises. I'm not going to lie, tears were rolling down my face, but I didn't say a word and kept letting him bend and stretch my knee and legs in ways they were never designed to be bent. Finally, at the end he said he needed to take a measurement to indicate how far I could bend my knee at this point. So, grimacing through the pain, I bent my knee to the point where I thought I was going to die. He asked me to hold it while he measured, and then told me I was at a 99. I asked him what that meant, and he said it was a measure of the angle of the bend. He said the goal after knee surgery was for patients to get to 90 within 2 weeks of surgery. Frustrated that I had only gotten to 99 and not closer to 90 (especially since my knee had been feeling so good prior to this), I asked if I could try again. He had a surprised look on his face, but said okay. This time I really pushed it, fighting through the pain and the burning sensation in my knee to get it to bend as far as I could. I was determined to get as close to that 90 degree mark as I could. When he finally took the measurement, he exclaimed that I had hit 105. I was devastated at hearing this, and let out a few expletives under my breath. He asked me, "What was that for?" I told him I was angry that I couldn't get my knee as close to 90 degrees as I had wanted to. He exclaimed, "Close to 90? You bent your knee way past 90 my friend. That was one of the best first-day bends I have ever seen for this type of surgery!" Baffled, I said to him, "But I couldn't get close to 90, my measurements were too high." He laughed and said, "The higher the number, the better! You want to get that number as high as you can!" At that moment I felt so proud of myself for my achievement on the first day. He warned me though that I was going to feel the pain later from stretching my knee so far on the first day. And boy was he right! I went to stand up and felt like an atomic bomb went off inside my knee! I couldn't wait to get home to get the knee iced down! And here I lay now with the leg propped up high and my knee covered in ice packs, and the pain throbbing throughout my leg. But I have determined that I am not going to take any painkillers throughout this ordeal, so once the knee goes numb from all the ice, I should be feeling much, much better. ...until we do it all over again tomorrow morning! I promise you, tomorrow I am not going to try and bend my knee to 105 degrees. If he says 90 is the goal, then 90 is where I'm going to stop! lol

After today's pain, I will have no problem taking my time through the rest of the journey. Besides, I am ahead of schedule, so I can slow down and take it much more easier now (assuming my injury rehab specialist will let me).

It wasn't like I was trying to go faster than I should. I just thought I was behind where I needed to be. Had I known that 99 was a great measurement to begin with, I would have been like, "That's great, no need to keep going. The session's over for today. Thanks you, see you tomorrow!"

Ouch at hearing this! There really is no need to push so hard and so soon, but you are doing much better than expected. Ice up to feel better. I'm glad to know you are like our family - we don't take meds unless we are dying.

I thought for sure with the way Big Pharma is making record profits and the fact that we have such an opioid crisis that everyone likes to pop pain pills, but it seems that the majority of people I've spoken to on this site are like us in that they shun pill and painkillers as much as possible. Really encouraging to see, and gives me hope that this entire country is not doped up on addictive painkillers.

@moffittjc Well, for many of us that's true. However, I do know a few on here who seem to be pill poppers, but they have big issues. Hope you are feeling better after that ice.

Why don't they explain this stuff properly? It's a bit annoying really. But I'm glad you did so well. Back off a bit now.

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. Why didn't he explain all this to me before he started the physical therapy? It sure would have made my life easier.

I think you are doing great already! But of course healing does take time. I remember getting a lecture from my Physical therapist that I shouldn't have even been on crutches, I should have been in a wheelchair and not putting any weight more than stepping on an eggshell on my knee haha Keep resting and keep healing, you will be back to normal in no time the way you are going!

I've already told my brain it has to tell my knee to heal quickly. So I'm using a Jedi mind-trick--I mean the power of positive thinking--to help my body heal faster.

Ouch!! Poor guy but glad you are determined to get healed faster. That was silly to go to 105 when you just needed 90. I felt bad you had tears. I hope it gets easier and easier each day.

@noni1959 Your body will respond to what your brain tells it to do! I was very adamant before the surgery that I wasn’t going to take painkillers, and that my knee was going to heal ahead of schedule. To date, I haven’t taken a single pain pill, and I am at least a week to two weeks ahead of schedule on physical therapy. Brain power really works!

When I fell off a cliff at a state park many years ago, I was limping really bad. I wasn't in pain. The doctors thought I had bruised or sprained my leg somehow. They gave some crutches and I refused to use them. When I get really tired, I still have that limp. Good for you for not taking any pain killers.

@moffittjc no I never found out. I haven't been back to that state park since then. I would love to see it again. But I won't be running the rain next time. That is what cause the fall to happen.

@NJChicaa I am very impressed with the advancements in orthopedic surgeries. I took my bandages off yesterday to clean around the incisions, and I can barely see them. There are three on my knee, but I bet that in a month's time I won't be able to tell where the three incisions were! When I had my double hernia operation a few years ago, they made three arthroscopic incisions, and to this day I can't find any of them.

@nela13 Yes, everything is feeling much better now. The knee is feeling really good. I'm still using crutches for support, but I'm also spending more time trying to walk without the crutches. It's getting a little easier each day, although I still have a very noticeable limp right now.

@MommyOfEli2013 I thought it would be much worse due to the linger pain and swelling from the physical therapy session. The surgeon said today I still have a lot of swelling going on in the knee, but otherwise I'm looking really good.

When you say "making the most of my approved vacation," do you mean laying on the couch for an entire week with my knee propped up and covered with ice packs? If so, then I'm definitely making the most of it!

@hereandthere The ice packs are those gel packs that can be heated in the microwave, or frozen in the freezer, so there's no puddle of water. But I did notice the pillow that is propped up directly under the knee is damp from moisture, probably from condensation from the ice packs.
