New Television

Last weekend when my wife was away I happened to turn the television on. I was quite shocked how bad the picture was. When she returned I asked her how long it had been that bad she said oh for months. I asked her why she never said anything as I know she likes to watch television. She told me it was ok it can wait till next year. Hmm no it can't and I set about researching different televisions to replace this one. There are so many different types of televisions available these days and massive sizes. They are not like the televisions of days gone by these days these are smart televisions. Oh boy they can do so much I was impressed. In the end I could not make up my mind which television to buy. As many of you know I rarely watch television so I called my son in law who is very tech savvy. I told him what I thought would be a good television and he agreed with me. So I ordered it and it was delivered last Wednesday. I wrote a post about waiting in all day for the thing to arrive! The television is so thin and so light and it was so easy to install I am very impressed with my purchase and I even managed to watch a whole film without falling asleep although I dare say my grandchildren helped keep me awake during the film. When I was a kid we had a television which only had three channels. BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. The first time I ever saw a colour television was on the day they landed on the moon. The colour quality was rubbish when I think of it as the whole thing looked purple to me. I remember running home to my parents very excited telling them one of our neighbours had a colour television and I watched Neil Armstrong land on the moon. Everything was purple! It was not long after we got our own colour television. The contrasts in colour and speed of the television is incomparable to the early days not only that over 100 + Channels are available plus netlix and other pay to view sites. It connects to the mobile phone has internet installed on it oh my goodness it is amazing the difference. My question to you is do you get overwhelmed by the choice of things available these days with all their permutations and gadgets attached to them?

We earlier had black and while TV in our home, before the introduction/advent of coloured TV. In India TV transmission was commercially started in 1969 and only one channel viz. Doordarshan (Government channel) used to be there. The coloured TV was introduced here in India in 1982 when Ninth Asian Games were held here. We have graduated from Black and White TV to colour TV, then to LCD, followed by LED TVs and now we could buy curved smart TVs.

@garymarsh6 Yes, you are very right that our respective kids may not realize that we have traveled a lot in terms of progress and innovations in our life.

Things have moved on so much in our life time. Something I think kids do not realise but we have lived through the making of history on so many fronts!

@garymarsh6 I am well overwhelmed by all things tech. When I was growing up in Malawi TV was banned. Because the President didn’t want Malawians being corrupted by pictures of girls in miniskirts. He also banned long hair on men. It was quite the novelty to see TV in 1972 when we came back to Ireland. You will surely remember having to rise from the sofa to adjust the volume or change channels by twiddling knobs!

@garymarsh6 My kids are unsure if they should believe me when I tell them about the test card on TV, and that the National Anthem played at the end of transmission every night.

Congratulations on your new TV. I don't get overwhelmed with TVs, only because my husband won't part with all the remote control thing-a-majigs. He's actually taken them out of my hand!. Enjoy!

I love having more than three channels like the old days. I remember the confusion when I got my first smart TV. I had to call the company to get it set up. I'm not tech savvy, but I can get around if it isn't too technical. I soon had everything working as it should and I enjoy watching it every day. I don't have cable, but I do have a couple of streaming options, Netflix, Hulu, and Roku. I hope you enjoy your new TV.

Thanks it is quite exciting. I guess you just have to play around with it a bit until you acquaint yourself with all the different things on it,. OH yes there is so much choice these days we are indeed very lucky! Well compared to when we were youngsters but then we did not really watch that much TV as we were out playing all the time!

We also need a good TV but like your wife's thoughts, it can wait for some more time. There are lot of other things are on the priority list. Congrats for your new TV

You were lucky when you were a kid Gary. The TV came in Italy that I was 5 years old, my father almost immediately bought one, but, with a small screen, black and white and Italy only had 1 Channel RAI 1. There is a very large choice now, hard to decide what to buy.

@garymarsh6 That is great that you have Netflix. I have a nice flatscreen TV and love it. I had no idea what kind to get so my technician helped me and we go along with Netflix. I could not figure out what air purifier to get so asked my technician to help me.

we pulled out a VHS movie a while ago and attempted to watch it. Compared to DVDs it was horrible. I think it's kind of funny how spoiled we have gotten. I remember watching black-and-white tv (we didn't get a colour set until I was 6 or 7. I remember having to turn the attic antenna in an attempt to get a good picture. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't. I remember watching movies when the horizontal control wasn't working properly and the image was slowly and continuously rolling up the screen.

Hahaha the agonies of our childhood. I recently saw a video on facebook of teenagers presented with a dial telephone. They had no clue how to use it. That made me laugh!

We started with a black and white the first ones to own one . I remember the number of kids who came over to watch their favourite programme. I still remembere Lucile Balle, If it's Tuesday it must be Belgium and so on It has gone a long way now and we pay only for those channels we choose.

I am still a basic girl at heart. I do research when I am going to buy something like a new TV. There is so much out there, you can get lost in all the information. But, you have to know, who you can trust when you are researching anything.
