Coming Up for Air

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to squeeze in some time to play on MyLot. As I anticipated, Shrek the Musical was way more than I could really handle. For the past several weeks the cleanliness of my house, the quality of our meals, and the attention I’ve given my yard have all eroded significantly. Despite it all, I managed to get most of it all done. There are a few bits that slipped between the cracks: when Papa Bear sings the line that he’s raising his furry fist there is no fur on it; when Farquaad’s personal choir saunters on stage their choir robes still have crease marks from the original package; and I refuse to even discuss the dragon. We opened to a nearly full house on Friday night and are currently in the relatively peaceful lull between performance weekends. Today, or the first time in more than a month, I took some time to get my house in order. The dishes are washed, the floors are clean, and both showers have been scrubbed. I have done NOTHING related to Shrek. Yesterday, however, I spent the day deodorizing the foulest of the costumes (and after two full dress rehearsals, preview night, and three performances some of them were pretty rank) and performing surgery to repair Lord Farquaad’s broken left ankle. Unfortunately, the repair resulted in one leg being noticeably shorter than the other so I ended up repeating the surgery on his right ankle. Hopefully, life will settle enough that I’ll be able to pop in here fairly regularly!

It sounds like you were far busier than you had anticipated you'd be.

I knew it was going to be crazy but I'm a little irked that I didn't get the co-costumer that I asked for and we weren't able to rent any of the specialty pieces we needed (rental prices were ridiculously high).

@SophiaMorros I think they should have gotten you a co-costumer, especially as you were having to do more sewing with the price of the rental pieces being too high. Flash Flood Warning here, has it extended to you yet?

@ScribbledAdNauseum My phone was screaming a few minutes ago. Most of the storms have skimmed just to the north of us today but we've heard lots of thunder.

I hope that you are keeping photos of all of these creations that you are working so long and hard on. It would make for a really great memory book.

I haven't had time to take photos of everything (and backstage photos never seem to turn out well). I've asked cast members to tag me when they post photos of costumes to Facebook, but so far I haven't been tagged .

@xFiacre the actor playing Farquaad does all his scenes on his knees. He says he'll never take his legs for granted again .

Glad you had a quiet (of sorts) week. I'm sure you will celebrate when Shrek is a memory.

Currently Shrek is stuffed in the trunk of my car and the backseat... ...now I get to launder/dryclean all the smelly stuff and the figure out where to stash it in the costume shop. Another week and it will be behind me

Whoa! Don’t forget to breathe! How much longer for the performances? Hopefully the cast are gentle on the costumes.

Two more shows. Saturday night and a Sunday matinee. I'm not certain everything's going to hold together. The duloc dancers have been tough in their costumes!

I didn't know Shrek was a musical. Glad you had a sell out at the theater. Oh no, poor guy.

They made it into a musical 10 years or so ago. A movie of the Broadway version is actually available on Netflix.

I'm a little perturbed about the whole thing. I was promised a co-costumer AND we were supposed to rent most of the costumes...they didn't get me a co-costumer and renting costumes was WAY out of our budget.
