Yesterday was St. John day here in Portugal, we celebrate it in street parties where people eat sardines, buy basil and little toy hammer made of plastic to hit the others in the head
In my city we had a big parade and I made this collage to show a little bit of it but it's quality is not the best.
My kids love going to the street and enjoy St John party.
In Porto this is a very big party with people in the streets during the all night, a lot of tourists come to visit us at this time of the year as everyone is invited to the party.
Do you celebrate St. John?
P.S. I changed the picture so you can understand this better.

In 1963, the students looked for a noisy toy to celebrate the Burning of the Ribbons at the University. It was there that the hammer made of plastic appeared with a bellows that whistles whenever it hits something.
The success was so great that the students used it later in the feasts of St. John, which generated even more curiosity and started a tradition among the population, which persists to this day.
Here is a picture so you can understand it.

Yes, it is similar to the carnival but in this case, people don't wear costumes.

it's called feast of st john the baptist here (san juan bautista). many places around the country has him as their patron saint and celebrate it with water or along waterways.
