A Miracle Of Nature

Well, kind of. A negative one, though. Nobody will be happy if they get into close contact with it. When I saw this photo on the net, I thought that someone was holding two ostrich eggs in his hands. But no! These are hailstones! Can you imagine being hit by such a smasher? I'm sure it could kill small animals if it hit one at full speed. Imagine the damage done to cars, windows and roofs! The hailstones were found in Pescara, a town in the centre of Italy on the eastern cost. The whole region is being hit by severe thunderstorms and one can watch videos showing deckchairs and umbrellas flying across the beaches and tourists running back to their houses. The Adriatic coast of Italy is one of the most famous holiday regions for European tourists. I'm sure that this is not what you expect to experience during your holidays!

Wow, those are huge! The biggest I have personally seen were the size of golf balls and they did a lot of damage to cars.

We had the golf ball size some years ago. The damages were enormous. Professional gardeners lost their glass houses, roofs were destroyed, cars damaged. One doesn't want to imagine what these enormous hail stones can do.

A few years ago, Oklahoma was hit with hail this size. My youngest and family still lived there and it destroyed one of their new cars. They knew a storm was coming and put the horses in the barn and good thing they did.

@noni1959 This makes sense from the insurances' point of view, of course, but is not good for the people who suffer the damage.

@MALUSE It did but didn't cover the whole amount. They learned to get an umbrella policy or whatever they are called. It pays the part the main doesn't. Some places won't cover if the weather is the norm like in flood plains.

One of those monsters could smash a window and send a person to the hospital.

Hailstones can make a real mess of cars. A few years ago, a heap of brand-new cars were sold off very cheaply after a severe hailstorm.

Those are definitely big hailstones, they could kill someone! We get smaller hail stones, at times. If a person gets hit by these, they leave welts all over their body!

@kobesbuddy Our car was hit by small hailstones once. The roof looked as if the car had had pox.

@MALUSE Even the smaller ones will dent a vehicle, beyond recognition! Some of them are the size of a quarter.
