Was Your Mother a Good Cook?

My mother, God bless her, was one of the worst cooks ever. My father would always want to go out to eat. The only thing she made really well was spaghetti sauce and gnocchi. That was out of this world...and she was the world's best baker. She could make cookies like no other. She made meals like smelts and tripe which I couldn't stomach; and her chuck roast was dry and tough. Strangely enough, we always had chicken and spaghetti on Thanksgiving. I never really tasted a turkey until I went over to my boyfriend's (now my husband) house for Thanksgiving. I found out what I had been missing! I started cooking for them when I was around 18; and all of a sudden my father wasn't going out to eat! He enjoyed my cooking enough to stay home. How was food at your house? Photo Credit: Pixabay

No, my mom was the worst cook in the world, but her roast chicken and potatoes were to die for. My father’s mother had to teach her the basics.

@DianneN Mom was a terrible cook. Many years after we married, my husband confessed that he was scared at the idea that I would have learnt cooking from my mother.

My mother was a horrible cook. Her mother, my grandmother, was the best cook in the world but she didn't take lessons from her mom apparently. My mom never cooked anything she didn't like. So I never tasted broccoli, brussel sprouts, asparagus and many other things until I was out of the house. You mentioned spaghetti above, so I'll tell you about my mom's spaghetti. It is spelled RAGU. I remember dry and tough meat too. She cooked pork chops ofen and I remember other meats being dry and tough as well. She baked or broiled most meat.

@LindaOHio Yep! The only vegetables my mom cooked were corn, green beans, purple hull peas and butterbeans from garden when someone gave her some, and green peas from can. I don't recall any others except potatoes that went into potato salad.

Now that you mentioned it, my grandmother was a wonderful cook too! I don't remember vegetables in our house either...and they're so good! You had a very similar experience to mine.

When my parents married my dad said that my mama could burn water. He was a great cook and baker. He taught mama how to cook and she passed him by, except he remained a better baker.

Growing up she was not a good cook. She has gotten better over time though.

Spaghetti is definitely not a common food for Thanksgiving. That's awesome your father enjoyed your cooking so much! My mother was the worlds worst cook. The only thing I can think of that she made that I ever liked was pecan pie.

My mother is a great cook and always was! Now my dad cooks and does good, because my mom's health isn't good anymore.

My mom was fair. She didnt use a lot of seasoning on anything tho. So a lot of things were kind of bland tasting.

OMG! My mother was the best cook ever and I took up her talent, so I have been told. We rarely ate out. My dad cooked eggs or grits that is all. I began cooking for the three is us when I was 13.

My mother was a wonderful cook. Everything was homemade. She made the best pies and sweetbreads also. Jams, jellies, preservatives and pickles...etc. My mom's cooking was the best.

My mother is not a terrible cook but she's not the best either. She has a very limited repertoire when it comes to food and cooking. It was not until I left home and started making more meals the way I liked them that I realised what some foods were supposed to taste like! My mum cooks everything in fat, adds salt to everything, and makes what could be a healthy meal into a heart attack. Some of it tastes OK but I really notice the grease and saltiness of it now since I don't cook that way myself. My mum also only really cooks traditional English food - roast dinners, bangers and mash, stews, etc. so, again, it wasn't until I was responsible for my own meals that I had a takeaway that wasn't chips or that I tried other foods.

My mom liked to cook simple things, in the crock pot, beef stews, and many things made from a box. I didn't LOVE a lot of it, but I did tolerate it and appreciate it, as it filled a need. But honestly I feel like I am a much better cook. LOL. Hope she doesn't see this.

Oh I had to laugh at this! My mother (step-mother) was a terrible cook--she would burn meat and call it char-broiled--yuck! But she did introduce me to marinara sauce for spaghetti for which I am eternally grateful!

My mom is an awesome cook. However, she does tend to experiment a bit which understandably either succeeds or fails.
