Scones for the neighbour

I was up half the night with an upset stomach so I slept in till 8am. Vince is making scones – lemonade scones if you please. Our neighbours have rented out their property for the moment but the daughter is going to Nepal in a week or so. They are calling in this money for coffee and scones. The daughter is going to take some money to Nepal for us and will put it into the account of a family that Vince met when he was there. We are paying school fees for their little boy but so much goes in fees if you transfer the money from Australia. We’re taking this opportunity to send cash. Hopefully all will go well. Vince has a small amount of Nepalese money which we’ll give our friend and hopefully it will buy her a coffee or whatever until she is able to exchange her own money.

My tummy is okay now. I don't know what upset it but I'm sure it wasn't the four scones I had!

@JudyEv I was gonna say, if I was there, those scones wouldn't last very long!

Vince is so kind to make all those scones. I know that transfers are so much expensive, I hope that the cash system will work. How do you feel now Judy?

@JudyEv The banks should do something better to help people who want to donate to some countries. What they charge is ridiculous. I am glad you are fine now.

I'm fine now thanks. I'm glad we were able to save on the transfer fees. It puts people off helping overseas when it costs so much just to donate.

Disheartening is the exact right word. It seems such a waste to hand over so much money in fees. The scones are 250ml self-raising flour (do you perhaps call it all-purpose flour?), 125ml lemonade and 125ml cream. So the proportions are 2:1:1.

@crazyhorseladycx Our supermarket now has a very good range of gluten free products. I'm sure there is a flour you could substitute.

That is really awesome that you continue to financially support the family in Nepal. I'm sure every little bit of money helps. Smart to send cash instead of having to transfer it and pay fees.

@moffittjc And blow me down, just today we've been invited to a wedding there - end of January. I don't know if we'll go or not. Vince would like to go but I'm not sure. He probably wouldn't go without me this time. We'll sleep on it for a while. Something will turn up to point us in the right direction.

The school fees are paid for another year now. Quite possibly by the time we need to send the next lot, something/someone will turn up to help. Things have a way of working out, don't they?

We rarely know of anyone going to Nepal so it's funny how things come about. Quite possibly by the time we need to send more money, someone will turn up who can take it for us.

@judyev lemonade scones? Do tell. My contribution to the betterment of life for people in poor places goes to an isolated hospital in northern Malawi where I was operated on as a child. The money is administered by an Irish doctor who used to work there to ensure good usage of it. Otherwise the cash would find itself elsewhere such are things. Hope the stomach settles.

The lemonade scones are 250ml of self-raising flour, 125 ml each of lemonade and cream and that's it. We would rather find individual cases/people to help nowadays. At least you know what's happening to your money that way - well, hopefully anyway. We also give to an order of nuns that Vince's sister belonged to. They have 'cells' for want of a better word in many third-world countries and do good work in education, health care, etc. The stomach is fine thanks. It was probably the four scones that upset it!
