Cleaning What Is Not Used

I remember the days I worked cleaning houses on the side, I worked for wealthy people for the most part.
This one couple had a large house, 5 bedrooms, living room and den, breakfast nook and formal dinning room. Each bedroom with its own bathroom and a half bath by the living room.
They used and lived in one bedroom, one bathroom, den and breakfast nook that was by the kitchen.
Each week I cleaned the main living areas first, then I was instructed what to clean that was not dirty.
Why have such a big house and never use it? Seems like a waste of money paid on power and heat. Oh, and someone to clean it.
I have to say, all of my home is used and all of it needs cleaned, right now.
Got any thoughts?

You are talking about our home. We have 5 bedrooms, two family rooms, a living room, etc., but we love all the roominess. They are there in case we need them for the kids and grandkids. Money isn’t an issue. If it were, we’d downsize.
I do have a cleaning lady and she’s happy for the work.

See you have family and friends that come all the time, that is a huge difference and that you are wealthy enough to have someone else clean is the plus.
I am still collecting my wealth.

Maybe they bought it or were given it when they had a large family. Once the kids grew up and moved out the house would be big for just the couple. Usually that’s when people will downsize to another house.
3 of us live here. There’s one bathroom and three bedrooms.

@andriaperry growing up our house was very big but 4 bedrooms. It had a giant playroom and upstairs bathroom. There was many rooms downstairs. My parents still live there as well as my sister and her 4 kids. They put a large addition on when her two oldest were little so now there is an additional bathroom, bedroom and living area/kitchen. The house is giant and costs my father a fortune to hear it. It used to cost them around $9000-$15,000 a year for oil to heat it so they switched to what I have which is forced hot air and only pay about half that amount per year. They used to have the old radiators when it cost so much more.

I need to clean. Usefulness was what I had in mind when I bought this house. It still needs cleaned, however.

@andriaperry That's true. There isn't much of our house that doesn't get reasonably regular use.

I use to do that kind of work, too, and you are right....why are they in it? lol.. I use toalso do new-house cleaning and that was a challenge! Construction peeps leave and I went in to clean things up for the new owners to move in.. that was a job!! and I often wondered why they would want some of the stuff they had built!

I wonder if they ever downsized. I'm happy with our small home (the less to clean, the better.) But I would love to have another couple of bedrooms for when the kids come home.

Imagine cleaning this place back when it was a house
It's called wentworth woodhouse and is supposedly the largest private house in the UK (royal residences are not prvately owned they're essentially state owned sort of)
I doublt all 300+ rooms were ever used and I bet it's a money pit to heat

Even if I won a big lottery, I would not want a big place.
