Remember the Millenium Celebrations?

The year 2000 seems so long ago and I can't help wondering what all the fuss was about. The computer world especially got people worked up with their scare mongering about computers crashing. However, I do remember how determined I was to celebrate the occasion in style. My father was born in 1907 and always lamented the fact that he was born too late to see one century change and too soon to be still around for the next. Centuries are more meaningful to me than milleniums. Now here we are already one fifth of the way through the next century. I like the sound of the 2020 date, it's nice and rounded. The image above is a postcard I own of the Millenium celebrations 2000 - 2001. I wonder if by the end of this century people will still be sending postcards through the mail? I very much doubt such a thing will happen when the next millenium occurs.

@valmnz My youngest was born in 2001 which makes me feel very young indeed. And no, she wasn't the result of us getting carried away celebrating the start of a new century! Actually I have a very active friend who was born at the start of WW1 and she still sings in the church choir! She has been alive now during 12 decades.

@xFiacre that's good to hear. Wish her well for me. Do you two still have your regular cafe date?

@valmnz Really well thanks. She leaves school in June and will start a life skills course for people with Downs Syndrome in a further education college in September.

Snail mail is becoming a thing of the past. The only thing I get now is junk mail. I even get my bills online. I also pay them online. That's a nice postcard.

Happy New Year @ValnmZ I do remember the turn of the century scare for crashed computers. It was quite a scare and over rated! I think postcards will be obsolete by then. I always enjoyed them myself.

I remember when we went from 1999 to 2000, just because my mother, my brother and my niece stayed with us and we waited for midnight. My grandmother was born in 1891, so she had seen the change of the century, I am glad I have also seen one.

Your grandmother was lucky. I'm sure celebrations were quite different then though.

@valmnz No celebrations at all when she was young, families had not a lot of money, the most kids received as a gift was an orange.

Oh I was a young and single during those times. I was just a few years old from my college graduation and just got a jobe back home. I think that during the New Year we went into a large stadium to watch a fireworks display back then. It was fun and enjoyed my single blessedness since a year after that I got married already.

Yes, I remember it. At that time I was young and I counted down and then spent a long time to walk home since there was no traffic anymore since everybody was out I think the world was much more peaceful than today.

I remember the Millennium well. It was an exciting event. I love years that are even numbers, but 2020 seems extra special. You have a good point regarding postcards. Yours is special and should definitely be saved!

LOL--I was at my friend's house that new year's eve, and when the ball dropped the first thing we did was run to his room and check his computer--which of course, still worked. They sure got everyone worked up.

I didn't own a computer at that time so I didn't really understand what the fuss was about. Regarding postcards - Like you I don't think they will be sent by the time the next century gets here.

I'll never forget the Y2K night. My parents had a big party at the house and I went out to a club with friends. When I got back home totally hammered I walked into the kitchen and found loads of leftovers sitting out on the counter and stove. . . including veal topped with crabmeat and a whole bowl of whipped cream. I chowed down! I think I need to write a post about that now.
