A blank newspaper liftout in case you run out of loo paper

There are lots of jokes now about the coronavirus and most of them involve toilet paper. The Northern Territory News is renowned for its headlines apparently but now it’s publishing an 8-page blank liftout which is designed to be used as emergency toilet paper. The irony is that Territorians are the only Australian people that haven’t been panic buying toilet paper. And, of course, it’s not a good idea to flush newspaper down a loo. However, I think it might just sell the a few extra copies. The photo is one of the magnificent gorges that can be found in the Northern Territory.

@judyev I worked (mentally) at a newspaper one summer. One day a serious error got through the proof reading and appeared in the final print and went on sale. The guilty person when tackled about it read through the offending article then threw it aside and said “Sure it’ll all be under sh!te by tonight”.

@JudyEv No, I think the bosses knew all about the veracity of his statement and took the same approach after tut-tuting a bit.

People are panic buying loo roll here too. I remember when I was young and we had an outside toilet, newspaper was in there instead of andrex. I think partly because it was unheated in the toilet and the newspaper didn't deteriorate as quickly. I can't remember ever using it though.

@orson_kart I was brought up with an outside necessary (though we did other things too) and newspaper was the order of the day. When I came to live in Ireland in the 70s some houses still had them. However in a damp winter the print often came off on one’s bum.

@xFiacre Exactly, and you could ask a good friend to read the news to you later in a more comfortable surrounding.

We had to use newspaper and even the shiny paper from magazines which was worse.

Panic is never good. Great that there is also a newspaper who has kept the sense of humor.

@JudyEv Humor can help loosen up the situation. I love humor, I love it when people don't take things too seriously when it is not the case.

@rappeter13 There are dozens of jokes going around. Australians tend to be a bit laid back about such things but I'm sure other countries are seeing the funny side too.

Oh, my! Vince did a fantastic job framing that photograph, Judy! That's gorgeous! And how funny that the newspaper is wasting their paper stock like that!

@JudyEv When I was a kid on the farm, we had an outdoor toilet. We had a wooden box full of newspaper as well as a roll of toilet paper. If the roll was empty, we did use the paper but none of us liked it. Did you take that photo instead of Vince?

@DaddyEvil When I was a child, Mum would write to an orchard and enclose a cheque and a case of apples would be railed to our nearest siding. The apples were wrapped in soft green paper which became toilet paper. It was a real luxury. I hate to say it but it's Vince's photo. This is one of mine. He uses Lightroom with dehazers and all sorts of 'enhancements' which help make his 'pop' a lot more.

I don't suppose they sell a huge number up there and possibly it would be a good selling point - simply for the novelty of having such a paper. They've certainly got some media coverage from it.

now the question would be what section is the paper in?

It's a liftout in the middle - but if it's blank, it won't be much fun to read while you're sitting on the loo.

@JudyEv so what if you only take the front page in, do you have to use the world news section instead?

I haven't heard not one joke about this virus involving toilet paper. But I do know about using news paper as an alternative. Don't ask me how I know.

We have enough for ages I think. I always like to have plenty on hand anyway and we just bought another pack so we're fine.

That blank pages of the newspaper is a very creative approach to the current hot issue of the corona virus. It may be funny but it can also be sarcastic. Nevertheless, it racks the brain to think sanely at this time.
