The United Kingdom is in Coronavirus lockdown

As from yesterday, people in the United Kingdom must stay in their homes for the next three weeks, apart from for a few precisely defined purposes. The previous policy of "social distancing" was seen not to be working, with thousands of people swarming to beaches, parks and popular open-air beauty spots to enjoy the Spring sunshine. The exceptions allow one outing for exercise per day, so the dog will get her walk later this morning. Apart from that, I'll be stuck at my desk for much of my time. I suppose that means more MyLot time - oh well, it's an illl wind ...

Presumably you are in one the states that has taken this step so far - do you think they will all follow suit?

I always thought that if anybody could keep a "social distance", those were the British. I am Latin and when I visited England I was amazed by the distance from person to person and the softness of their voices. But it seems that things have changed as more amd more people need to use the same premises. The best way is to stay at home if you can. Fortunately, we now have the phone, the computer and the web.

@indexer Even in lines before the cashier at a supermarket, I saw that people keep their distance more. And we kiss and hug every time we meet each other.

I can feel you with this matter. We have been lockdown since last week. The good thing is that the local people try to discipline themselves to follow the simple guidelines to combat the virus.

I do hope people start to take this seriously because they were really taking the Michael with social distancing. A total lockdown was inevitable.

@indexer Technically it doesn’t apply here till Stormont follows suit which is happening today. Devolved issue, though under the circumstances who cares.

I am pretty sure that it will work better in your country than in Italy or in Spain, the social distancing is working here.

Is the lockdown very strict for you? In our town we can still go out but not too far from home because there are checkpoints manned by the police. In some areas they need to get a permission to go out from the community leader.

It has only just started, but the rules are that you are allowed outside for certain purposes - exercise once a day, shopping for essential supplies, visits to doctor's surgeries and pharmacies, journeys to work if you cannot work from home, visits to help housebound elderly and disabled people - and that's about it. The aim is to reduce the rate of spread of the virus and thus take pressure off the health services. If everyone follows the rules, it should work.

@indexer yes, we have the same aim and I hope that will stop the rising number of cases.

There seems to be lot more interaction on here over the last week or so.
