Behave while I'm away

We are leaving shortly with the caravan and will be taking photos at a horse endurance ride. I’ve caught up with notifications for the moment and may not be here until, hopefully, tomorrow (Saturday) evening. Do you like this photo, taken at an endurance ride? The pony is displaying a flehmen response. When it does this – extends the neck, raises the head and inhales while rolling up its upper lip – it is, quote, facilitiating transfer of inhaled scent molecules. Maybe the attending vet had some strange smell on their lab coat. Cats, dogs, and probably other animals, do it too. The top lip curls as they try to analyse a particular scent. So I’ll catch up with you all when we get back.

I'm back now so you can go back to 'normal'. We had quite a fine morning and packed up just before the day turned to rain and wind.

I like this photo. Our horses do this often. They also wait until you are directly in front of them to blow their nose all over.

@JudyEv It seems they wait for me to come check and give them a rub before heading to the store or somewhere. Never fails I have to change. You would think I'd learn. haha

I've seen horses do that, but never knew what it was called. Doodles you to open his mouth and make a funny face when he smelled something odd. Great photo! Have fun!

I love that shot. I have no choice but to behave dammit. Sure was more fun long ago when misbehaving was easier.

I noticed the cat doing this, when there is a weird smell in the air. This is a beautiful horse. Enjoy your trip, we will all behave until you are back.

@judyev I’m going back to Donegal for a few days on Sunday and I can misbehave with impunity south of the border, although this part of ‘down south’ is situated north of Northern Ireland. Have fun with the horses.

@JudyEv Yes Donegal is part of Ulster but is not on NI. We are a little weird in this area.

I have learnt where all the Counties are now. It seems strange that Donegal is part of Ireland, being situated where it is. I must read up more about it one day.

There are some women well into their 50s and even 60s who are still riding. I am content now to take photos.

@JudyEv I know women in their 70's who ride horses. Last time I sat in a saddle I realized that my balance was gone and my knees trashed so I had to get help to get off. Not at all hilarious and deeply sad.

I have seen horses do that, now I know why. I knew cats do something similar, but hadn't connected it

It's not quite so evident in cats. I didn't know they did it either until I researched it although I recognised the facial expression. I've often seen it in bucks (goats) and rams.

what a fabulous shot'n glad ya 'xplained to folks what that means. mr. whiskey's been doin' that e'ery time the wind shifts. the neighbors 've brought'n a stud, quite certain that 'tis his concern. when they do such, there'd usually be a jail break'n their prized stud ends'p o'er here. inevitably, a battle 'nsues. mr. whiskey 'tis very protective 'f his lil herd. safe travels, hon. know y'all're gonna get some fabulous shots, hope ya share some here. big hugs!

@JudyEv {knockin' wood} 'tis been some time since such's happened. no way to separate 'em, lots 'f busted fences, gashes, deep cuts'n scrapes :( they've hot-blooded thoroughbreds. they tower o'er my boys. e'en a water hose'n full blast does not discourage the battles. mine'll try to get 'way from such, there's'll chase 'em fer a good mile, determined to win... i'd jest go collect my boys 'n patch their wounds, poor boys. 've jest the one now, but've added 4 more fences - all hot - to keep the neighbors out. i look ferward to such :)

I hope the stallions don't get in together too often as it must be very difficult to split them up. You'd need to be very careful. I hope to share some photos soon.

I love the picture. My first thought was that the horse liked being scratched. It's interesting what different attitudes animals display and the reasons for them.

Thanks for the kind words. I was searching for more information but couldn't remember the spelling. I tried 'phlegm' which would sound similar probably but has quite a different meaning.
