Red Hibiscus Blooming

Taking a little break from the travel photos and sharing with you my red hibiscus which bloomed right before we left on our trip. This is a big and beautiful red bloom! I have some more buds on this one and it should be blooming again soon! The hibiscus are new to me. I tried growing one years ago and lost it over the winter. My daughter loaded up on these last month and she hooked me into getting a couple for myself. So if they die, it's her fault!! I also have a double ruffle orange one that I will share with you soon. Do you like hibiscus flowers? Ever grown them? Have some good advice for me? © 2020 Karen Gros, All rights reserved

It's beautiful and big, so it's a hybrid hibiscus. Not much if a green thumb. The golden or orange color hibiscus is Oahu's State flower.

@kareng I believe the hibiscus originated from Hawaii too. Here's a link about history of them:

Lovely photo! I don't think we've ever had hibiscus; so I don't know what to suggest.

I've heard that some cut them off for winter down to the soil. I'll do some more reading on them for sure before we have a freeze.

@LindaOHio Oh no! I'm not ready for that yet. It was in the high 50's here today. It's coming, along with another tropical depression -- just what we need--NOT!

I always associated hibiscus with being a tropical plant, so I don't know how well it does in colder winter conditions. I don't know much about how to care for them, but growing up in south Florida my parents' yard was full of hibiscus bushes. I don't particularly remember any special care my parents gave them, but they had beautiful blooms every year. I hope your hibiscus bushes manage to make it through the winter!

With good faith I bought another one the other day. Hubby sat in the car and when I came out of the garden center with my buggy and opened the backseat truck door my hubby proclaimed, "My God, you bought a tree!!!" I just laughed and said no, it's another hibiscus and some flowers. Next stop was Harbor Freight where he needed a tool and I sat in the truck. I think I got better stuff than he did. LOL.

@moffittjc He had this wrench. Lost it. Also got a new set of screwdrivers and a case to put them in...because he keeps losing them. He never puts things up where they should be! Drives me crazy sometimes.

@kareng I might have to disagree with you on who got the better stuff! LOL But I hope your new hibiscus plant does well and thrives and gives you lots of years of beautiful flowers!

My old bosses wife had a greenhouse full of them. She wore a different color on her dress or blazer every day.

@DianneN She actually picked her flower of the day and then matched her clothing to the flower!

Looks identical to the one I had for years. It finally passed away. I would bring mine indoors over the winter.

Those are beautiful. I haven't grown them since they can be toxic to horses and where I live, I don't think they'll do too well.

Yes I like hibiscus flowers but don't have luck getting them to stay long, even mixing good soil and such in. I think the NC red clay dirt doesn't like for me to plant too many things.

I had a couple planted in Louisiana and they didn't survive. I'm trying again in Mississippi. We do have a good bit of clay in the soil here too.
