Do you know this plant?

We went to my sister-in-law’s on Saturday evening to celebrate her birthday. I was intrigued by this plant which was on her verandah. I thought the flower was very pretty. I’m not sure what the plant is but perhaps a myLotter recognises it. I thought it might be a mother-in-law’s tongue but the flower isn’t right. Does anyone have any ideas?

I knew it came from the Bromeliad family but a search confirmed it

It has small prickles along the edges but other than that, it's not dangerous.

The botanical name of this plant is Aechmea fasciata... usually called mother in law tongue (lingua di suocera in Italian).

@Fleura You are right, it's not a mother-in-law tongue... it is definitely a bromeliad, I was still sleepy when I read the post this morning.

I agree with the Latin name, it is a bromeliad as others have said. But to me, Mother-in-law's tongue is a different plant, with upright, long pointy leaves.

I don't know about the flower's name. But it seems like you already got your answer. But one for sure when people said it MIL's tongue, I know it's not that plant because my sister has MIL's tongue. And tbh I thought people here in my country made up the MIL's tongue, but apparently people world Wide also use that name.

If the name is a bit amusing it's bound to travel with the plant I think. There is a 'rotten meat' plant too which smells like rotting flesh.
