I am not sure with you guys if you eat sweet potatoes' tops or the leafy part of this root vegetable. I just need some shredded red tomatoes, mix with fish sauce and vinegar. I just want to share this piece of information that they are edible to eat. I can have it with just plain rice. Have you tried to eat the young sweet potatoes' tops? I am sorry if you can find them there. In my old house, we do have them in the backyard. Now, I need to buy them in the public market.

I hope you can have the chance to eat them. Perhaps you can plant a sweet potato and it will have these young leafy tops. Is it possible?

@Shavkat It is not possible in our current place. We had this plant in our native house in my childhood.

@Sreekala Oh, I see. It is also not possible here. Since we are just renting the place, the landowner might get angry if we plant some here.

I have been missing the moment of harvesting and boil them. Then, dip them to fish sauce with vinegar. It will be great if you can plant them and have the sweet potatoes as a snack, too.

@Shavkat I stay in a flat where it is not possible. In my childhood I used to be in sweet potatoes farm owned by my aunty. It was a huge one and they used to have big stacks of the material in their home.

Yes. We eat sweet potato tops almost everyday. In Bicol we usually add it in fish sour soup called "kusido" (Bicol version of sinigang).

@AkoPinay Before this pandemic, I was planning to go to Bicol. Well, I guess it needs to be delayed for now. I would like to try different delicacies in Bicol.

@Shavkat Best fish for "kusido" is Red Snapper fish but expensive haha GG is fine... we add sweet potato tops instead of water spinach (kangkong) and native lemon (kalamansi) instead of tamarind.

I like sweet potatoes but I have never eaten the leafy part. By the time the sweet potatoes reach our shops the leaves have been removed. I think the leaves on ordinary potatoes could be toxic, so I would not think of eating them.

I guess they really need to remove the leafy parts of sweet tomatoes there. I am not sure if they are toxic. We have been eating them in the past and until now. You have point about this. Let me check more about this concern.

I have never eaten young sweet potato leaves, let alone raw ones. More often eat young leaves from cassava which are made vegetables with coconut milk. It is very delicious eaten with hot chili sauce and salted fish.

Sweet potato vines aren't eaten here. Some of them may be edible but others are poisonous.
