Checked in on my retirement account

I honestly haven't checked on it in 2 years. My ex would look at it at least once a month but I haven't looked at it at all because it is what it is. The professionals manage the funds. I don't do anything but contribute money from each paycheck. Anyway I was paying some bills and I decided to see what the account is worth now. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it is up $20,000. It still isn't all that much but I'll take it. It will help to supplement my pension and Social Security when I retire.

@NJChicaa I try not to bother checking because as you say, it is what it is, and no matter how often you examine it looking at it doesn’t increase it.

I’ll check my so-so security later this year when I get ready to file for it. My Postal Service retirement is based on what I made at the post office, so there’s nothing to “add” to it or “check.” Also, that automatically kicks in next year, so no endless paperwork to file for that. From what I’ve seen $20,000 will get you a couple of weeks’ worth of groceries in New Jersey, so you’re doing well.

@NJChicaa — oh, wow! That’ll buy my house if you’re looking to retire in Kentucky.

You're well on your way to a comfortable retirement. I'm assuming you will have a pension from your teaching job as well?

@NJChicaa Then you will be all set. Once you get your house you can start building equity in that as well.
