House Cat Escapes And Spends The Night Outside -- (Animal Story 22)

I live on the second floor of a town house. When my neighbours gave me two cats - brother and sister - as a present, it was clear that they would be house bound - or rather flat bound. I didn’t see myself walking the 40 steps up and down in order to let them in and out of the house. They have the living room, the corridor, the kitchen, the bathroom and the balcony with the rain pipes on either side as their territory. Yet, they’re young and curious and, just like human beings, more interested in the things they can’t have than in the things they have. Yesterday it so happened that Lilly, the female cat, dashed out of the flat when I opened the door. I have to open the door every now and then as I am not slim enough to enter and exit through the keyhole! I didn’t notice it at once, only when I went back in, I realized that Lilly wasn’t there. I asked her brother Willy if he could tell me where she was, but he kept shtum. The door to the attic which is beside the door to my flat was closed, so Lilly couldn’t be up there. I called my neighbours downstairs to have a look in the basement whose door is often not closed properly. They did so and also went into the garden behind the house, whistled and called the cat’s name, but it was to no avail. It was already getting dark. I saw no sense in walking round the block calling the cat’s name. If it wanted to escape, it would do so and I could do nothing about it. I thought of writing posters in the morning and copying the photo of a British Shorthair from the internet which I could stick at fences and lampposts. Then I went to bed thinking how a spoilt house cat would survive alone in the wide, wild world. Of course, it was also possible that it would find new owners. Cats do that occasionally. They are not as faithful to their humans as dogs. When I woke up the next morning and went to the bathroom, I found Lilly sitting in the corridor looking sleepily at me with eyes half open. I was dumbfounded and flabbergasted! Had I had a nightmare? Or had I become crazy? I called my neighbours from downstairs to tell them about this extraordinary occurrence. They assured me that I was as normal or crazy as always and explained that when they had let their dogs go into the garden early in the morning, they had found Lilly huddled in the gazebo, taken her into the house and up the stairs. The keys to my flat are always in the lock on the outside. They had opened the door quietly and shoved the cat inside. Hurrah! Unfortunately, it doesn’t make sense to have a serious conversation with a cat and scold it. A cat understands nothing. I’m sure Lilly has already forgotten the night outside and will escape another time should ever the opportunity present itself again. As we could detect a limp in one of the hind legs, one daughter of the family downstairs took the cat to the vet and had it examined. He gave her a shot against possible pains but said that the leg would heal without him having to do anything further. The adventure cost 150 Euro / 129 GBP / $177. ----- The photo is from the net. My cat Lily resembles this cat. Photo: Tiermodellagentur ====== If you're interested in more animal stories, click on the green box above the title.
I live on the top floor of a three-storey town house. I have two cats, brother and sister. The breed is British Shorthair. They're noble and have a pedigree...

I'm glad she is OK and didn't run off getting lost. Cats understand but have that "whatever" attitude. Well, except when they want fed. Then they care a lot.

Sounds like Lilly had quite the adventure. Glad to hear your neighbor returned her to you and that she'll be okay. Just be mindful of where the cats are next time you have to leave.

@MALUSE Well, if they're underfoot it's hard to not know where they are. You're welcome.

Thank you for your comment. I'm always mindful, but when I go to the door and have two cats at my feet who're interested in seeing what's on the other side of the door, it's sometimes difficult to check on them.

I'm glad Lily is okay. You would be surprised what cats understand. I will always wonder what adventures my Sonny James kitty went through when he was gone for eight days. He is mostly an indoors boy so when he went missing like that I went crazy wondering and looking. One morning there he was on my deck, looking up at me.

It is indeed a pity that humans and animals can't talk to each other. Eight days is really a long time. I can understand how you felt and I can also imagine the innocent look the cat gave you after his return. :-)

@MALUSE There was still some snow and ice then. My cat is supposed to be on a specail diet. I put notices out to all the neighbors- we have coyotes in the fields here. I think someone managed to capture my big Sonny and dumped him back onto my deck. His thick black fur and big body makes him look like a bear cub when he is outside.

Cats are said to have seven lives, aren't they? So I'd better prepare myself for five more adventures.

The cat surely jumped and she had not the habit, this is possibly the reason why she limped. Cats are curious, often I have to go down and open our garage door because the cat of my neighbor gets stuck inside. This orange cat will never learn to get out when I say "Bubi, I am closing the door, get out of there!".

@MALUSE The Golden Retriever of my niece was a stupid dog, funny but not smart at all. That dog loved my husband and was all the time near him trying to lick him. My husband cannot stand to be licked by an animal, the dog never learnt. Not all dogs are smart, but some are, cats are selfish, even if they understand, they do not care to listen.

That's the problem with cats. They don't learn as easily as dogs although there are stupid dogs as well. I heard about two in my life. One dog, a pointer, used to hit its head *every time* it lay under a table when it got up. The other, I've forgotten the breed, lived in Copenhagen. When its owner walked with it through the city and had to cross a street, it could happen that the dog suddenly decided to lie down for a bit. It especially liked doing this on tram lines. The owner could do nothing to get it away from there. It didn't move. So he stepped back onto the pavement and looked into shop windows so that nobody could assume he had to do anything with the dog. When a tram came, the conductor had to get out and *carry* the dog away from the rails!

@MALUSE Here, I think a conductor would toot his horn a couple of times before squishing the animal.

You keep your key in the keyhole all the time? It's there not a problem with robbers or unsavory characters where you live? We don't always lock our doors, but... Got to go

Rivers? I'm adding a photo of the river flowing at the edge of our town. The area is about five km away from our house. The key is in the keyhole of the door to the flat. An unsavoury character would have to get into the house first for which they should have a key and then climb up two flights of stairs. I live on the second floor. On the ground floor lives a family with two dogs. They're completely harmless but can bark.

I wanted to send you a photo of the river which flows at the edge of the town which is about 3 km away from where I live, but the photo doesn't stick. I'll try again later. The door of the house is always shut and you need a key to open it. I leave the key to my flat/apartment - which is on the second floor - on the outside. The people from the two other families that live in the house can get in which may be necessary in case of fire, for example, when I'm not at home or to feed my two cats when I'm away on holiday. We trust each other.

That is the trouble with cats, you never know what they are doing when you cannot see them. It sounds like she had an expensive night out. My neighbour had a cat that used to sleep on their car roof. One day the neighbour got in the car to go to work , opened the roof window to let some air in and while he was driving the cat jumped on him.

@lazydaizee Thanks for asking. I can't notice the limp anymore. But yesterday I touched the cat in a way I shouldn't have done and it emitted a strange sound I hadn't heard before. Obviously, I had touched a sore spot. I apologised and think I'm forgiven.

You make it humorous ...with inability to go out through keyhole, and inability to converse with cats. Are cats spayed like dogs? I think a dog would have been a better gift..
@MALUSE (69373)
• Germany

Spayed and neutered as the cats are boy and girl. A dog would certainly not have been a better gift. It has to be walked every day, rain or shine. Cats are not interested in being walked.

Ouch, I feel painful knowing that you had to pay the vet for your cat's adventure. (How have you fared with the cleaning of your cats' litter trays daily? My daughter has a pair of brother and sister cats here, but I ended up being the cats' cleaner & carer. Life has been hard for me since the cats' arrival.)

@MALUSE I am glad you have a helper in this regard. I am hoping the cats here will eventually eat less and use the litter tray less (they are 6 months old right now, some say cats will be better in that area by the time they turn 9 months old. I am counting down the time).
