I have horrible anxiety, I take medication's for it but how long am I supposed to depend on chemicals? I really don't want to spend the rest of my life taking lexapro and ativan, there is surely some long term use malady they don't know about that I will be sure to get! lol
Does anyone know of coping techneics for anxiety? My doctor is clueless. Maybe I should change docs..bleh.

Hey u!!!!! Well I can fully understand how u feel - although with me since I am also Bipolar - I have to be on meds for the rest of my life - would go nutso if I didn't take em!!!! There are therapies out there - like cognitive behavior therapy or I once tried EMDR - it's like trying to focus your eyes while listening to different techniques that you can try - it never worked for me!!!
Hey here's a site that I visit sometimes to gain helpful information - maybe you can take a peek and see if you can find anything there that will help!!!
And if u feel like your doc is just medicating you to get you out the door then definitely change docs!!!! I have had so many freakin docs - it's not even funny - but luckily I have found 1 that really listens to me - no matter how long I take in the chair(or couch or whatever)!!!

Feel free to contact me anytime!!!!! Sending u some Vibes now so that you will have a Happy Day!!!!!

I know what you mean. I am bipolar also. I found it interesting that you tried EMDR. I have too. It really didn't work great for me, but there is something to be said for the method. I think that some people it could work very well on. I just have too much "junk" in the trunk". I agree with you...finding the right doctor is essential. You have a good day.

Hope you have a Happy Day too!!!!

I found a session with a good counsellor was invaluable, it showed me how to see the full perspective in any situation when my anxiety got the better of me, and whilst I won't pretend to be cured, it has helped immensly. I only went once, but that was enoug to show me how to approach the negative feelings and see the bigger picture. Also, take some tim eto be kind to yourself, book a massage, go for a walk on teh beach, whatever works to give you some space to yourself.

Hi:) I haven't tried counseling yet, i've just been going to my primary care doc, I'm beginning to think it might be a good idea to give it a try. I guess i just need to find a good one.
I never thought of taking a walk, I think i'll give that a try next time, my backyard is big enough that atleast i wont have a panic attack about being in public. I'm so tired of anxiety.

I would recommend changing doctors. It in essential that you have a doctor that you not only feel comfortable with, but one that tries to understand the complexities of what you are going through. I have suffered with anxiety since my early teens. I have also suffered with depression my entire life. I was diagnosed as being bipolar about 3 years ago. I will never be off of the meds. I also recommend that you see a counselor, talk therapy can be a very useful tool in fighting both the anxiety and the depression. You need to get to the root of what is causing these symptoms in you. Perhaps it is emotional and you can work off the medication. Or it could be a chemical imbalance, in which case your body need the medication in order to function. Either way...you should find out. If I can help or if you need to talk, message me, and I will do my best.

I also deal with anxiety and it does get harder and harder to deal with. Some things I do is I make sure I have some water with me to make sure I have something cool to drink...that sometimes help. I never to go places where my anxiety will flurish alone. I make sure I have a friend with me. I don't take meds, but I seem to manage pretty well.

you know, I always get very thirsty when I have a panic attack, I always end up stopping and sending whoever is with me in to get me a sunkist soda. I should start keeping a cooler in the car when I go far from home. Thats a great idea. Thanks for helping me think of it!

There is a website called Panic Survivor. It's for ALL types of anxiety disorders and depression. And they have a nice forum on there, so you may want to talk to some people on there if you can't get much help here. I found it to be very nice. I haven't joined myself but I've been browsing around and reading the topics. http://www.panicsurvivor.com
Hope that helps!

I've changed meds so many times...it's ludicrous!
Ativan is the only thing that helps even a little bit. So..I take it when I'm having a really bad attack.
psycho therapy...Oh boy

I feel your pain about having anxiety. I have it also, it's not a fun thing to deal with. I wouldn't just stop taking the medicine they've given you. Seriously talk with your doctor about it, and if you get no results, then yea..i would change docs and see if someone else may be able to help you.
I wish you good luck! let us all here at mylot know how you are doing.
Have a Great Christmas!!!

I don't suffer from this myself, but I know people that do. I've heard from a couple that the Lucinda Bassett series helps a lot. it's called "attacking Anxiety and Depression." Sorry I can't give any personal experience, I just wanted to throw this in there.

I had horrible anxiety for many years that suddenly and unexpectedly disappeared after I received a Rx for Nizoral. So it appears that my anxiety was caused by candida or yeast overgrowth, since curing the candida also cured the anxiety. The relief was amazing and permanent, but since then I find myself feeling strangely nervous only if I consume too much sugar. Did you know that if sugar was invented as of today, it would be banned by the FDA because it acts similiar to herion in that it enters the blood stream too quickly.

ha..that is amazing!!
Maybe I should go in for a complete checkup...see if the anxiety is being caused by my body somehow! ..sheesh, If only I were that lucky!
I'm glad you found a cure:)

I have suffered from anxiety and panic attacks off and on for years. Recently, my husband and I thought I was going crazy. I couldn't sleep at ALL. Everytime I'd drift off, I'd jump up and feel like I couldn't breathe. I'd run outside like a maniac, trying to slow my rapid pulse, trouble breathing, etc. The panic was CONSTANT! I was afraid of everything...it was really freaky. I don't believe in medication, but I tried Buspar and it didn't help. I borrowed Valium from my neighbor and that didn't help either. Ambien helped me get an hour or two of sleep, but that was it! What finally helped me was prayer and a product called Gaba Relaxer. I bought it from my local health food store. It's by Country Life and this stuff is great! A miracle! I don't know what I would have done without it and it helped within a half hour!!It's a combination of amino acids. Check it out at www.country-life.com. Good luck!

Well to be honest I try my bestto fight it in my way and most of the time it works but you have to set your mind to it
Whatever the Anxiety is fight in your mind fight it
That is how I deal with it because I do not want more medications to deal with and if I get really bad I take the easy way out and go to bed and sleep

Many situations or activities, such as writing, taking tests, competing in sports, or speaking before a large audience, may make us anxious or apprehensive. It's important to remember that a moderate level of anxiety is helpful and productive. That flow of adrenaline is a natural response that helps get us ready for action. Without it, we might not perform as well.
If we let our anxiety overwhelm us, it can cause problems. If we control that anxiety, however, we can make it work for us. One way to do that is to use some of the coping strategies listed below.
Coping Strategies:
Focus your energy by rehearsing the task in your head.
Damn, thats a hard questio.. anxiety consciously stops the non-productive comments running through your head by replacing them with productive ones.
I suggest litle rituals like these-
-Follow a protocol you may have for organizing your time. Use a favorite pen if you have one.
-Spend a few minutes doing some relaxation exercises.
-Take a break: physically walk away from the situation for a few minutes if you can.
-Stretch a lot man! If you can't stand up, stretch as many muscle groups as possible while staying seated.
-Try tensing and releasing various muscle groups. Starting from your toes, tense up for perhaps five to ten seconds and then let go. Relax and then go on to another muscle group.
-Breathe deeply. Close your eyes; then, fill your chest cavity slowly by taking four of five short deep breaths. Hold each breath until it hurts, and then let it out slowly.
-Use a calming word or mental image to focus on while relaxing. If you choose a word, be careful not to use an imperative. Don't command yourself to "Calm down!" or "Relax!"
Hope that helps, Have a nice day!

If you're talking about an MD, he/she might not be the best person for understanding and treating anxiety. Maybe see a therapist/counselor instead. There are all kinds of anxieties and treatments for them--exposure therapy, etc.
The good news is anxiety can be very treatable, clueless drs. shouldn't keep you from seeking out a solution.

i'm sorry you have to deal with this. my sister-in-law has severe anxiety...so much we rarely see her because she stays out of sight all the time. my husband read a book called natural cures...it is by kevin trudeau. it gives natural remedies of things you can do to ease certain issues...anxiety being one of them. a lot of times are biggest health problems have more to do with an imbalance in our system rather than something that needs to be medicated. why medicate what you can treat? if i were you, i'd check the book out, change my diet accordingly and pray for the best. hope this helps.

I suffer from depression and anxiety too. I'm also on lexapro. I have been on it for years and am pretty sure i will have to stay on it. I wish they would come up with something that didn't have the side effects. Meditation helped me with the anxiety but not depression,

I take lexapro too. Mostly for depression but it does help with anxiety. When I'm not on lexapro, meditation helps with my anxiety. Deep breathing exercises are also good. Some people have had luck with hypnosis though it didn't work for me. I wasn't able to be hypnotized.
