Old buildings in Greenhills, Western Australia

We recently stayed in Greenhills, Western Australia. It is a very small town consisting of a hotel and about four houses. There are information signs along the street stating what used to be on that particular block. About a mile from the main township is this small church. Although it was hard to photograph, you can see from the roof that the building is not square but is angled, which I found interesting. The hotel was established in 1906. This means nothing to those of you living in countries with history that goes back hundreds of years but in Australia, it means the pub was built in the very early days of settlement. I didn’t take a proper photo of it but in this one of Vince’s, you can see the hotel in the background.

I really like that little church. I would love to be able to afford to have a 5 or 6 sided house built here, well, I can dream.

@rebelann I bet you would love a yurt or a geodesic dome.

@rebelann Huh? There has to be a geodesic dome here somewhere. Eight sided hippie building. Buckminster Fuller started it.

The tiny churches seem to embody the 'spirit' more than the massive, ornate ones.

Very interesting. Also interesting that you live in a country with a fairly new history.

@LindaOHio It seems there was farming in the area from at least 1876 as there was a mail service in those times but no Post Office. The PO was commissioned in 1888. I'm glad you asked. I took photos of all the signs in case I needed the information later.

There is nothing that goes back for thousands of years. That sort of history blew me away on my first trip overseas.

@JudyEv How far back was the original settlement? 1900s?

@JudyEv true. Always wanted to take photos of old buildings in our city but can't do so with this pandemic.

@allen0187 Hopefully one day you'll be able to again. There would be some very old buildings in your country.

thanks for sharing . I love old buildings if I don't have to live in them. Ths place we live was built in 1967 and I don't think it's ever been upgraded.

@JudyEv and it's nice to see ones kept for history but they shouldn't rented out with no upgrades till they fall around a persons ears .

So it is quite cold there ! You are the one without the number "143"? And the Church looks of a different style but quite a small one! Nice share.

It is winter here. Friday and Sunday were very wet and cold but Saturday was a bit finer. That's not me. We don't have horses. We just take photos. This is me.

I like to imagine how people would have lived generations ago. And what kept them engaged, their lifestyle. These buildings give a clue.

The notice said the first church was a stone building but was condemned by the authorities as unsafe so then they raised the money for this one.

There would have been a very small population there when the church was built - mostly a few farmers and a few in the town.

@allknowing It is an Anglican church so probably not too many confessions to remember.

The road was wider than some I've seen. It is a main road between bigger towns now.

Thanks. There are dozens of these small churches. Our friend bought one and lived in it. It was really lovely too but a stone one.

Interesting construction, it's not common to see an angled building. The apartment building where we lived during 31 years in Monte Carlo was built in 1906.

@JudyEv Since there are only 4 houses in the town then everyone must know everyone. I see the hotel in the background.

@JudyEv that is the reality sometimes, there are those that go big (hoping people will come) and those that stay small (living in their means) when it comes to churches!

Most of the congregation would have come from the farming community. There are only about four houses now but there would have been more some years ago.

Old buildings are always interesting. If I see an old building I wonder about who lived there and the conditions of life at that time. That old tumbledown church made me think of the faithful who worshipped there and the girls who were married there, when that little church was the place where their dreams of love and marriage came true.
