I’m the Babysitter

Hi! We had a frantic call from our son and daughter-in-law Monday night. Their old nanny was supposed to babysit the kids while they were in San Francisco for business and pleasure, but she fell and broke her elbow and something else. We were next on the list as trusted babysitters and of course we accepted. That’s what grandparents do. Taking care of newborns is easier! Hubs put one on the school bus while I drove the other to the college at 8:00am for skating and online schooling. In the car now with hubs and our grandson waiting in the parking lot for 5:00pm dismissal. Breakfasts, dinners, music lessons, laundry, cleaning, shopping, homework, car pools, school schedules, play dates, religious school, etc…. It’s exhausting! But we love it! Tonight we are taking the kids out for dinner and dropping our granddaughter off for a sleepover at her friend’s house. Our grandson is having a friend over for a sleepover. Their mom and dad are flying home right this minute. Hubs and I will spend one more night in the guest room and drive home tomorrow. So that’s what we’ve been up to in case you were wondering where I was. Happy Friday/Saturday!

@DianneN Grandparenting is exhausting, especially trying to respect the parents' ways of doing things when you know far better what works! They really do get strange notions about child rearing! We've just added number 6 to our collection.

@DianneN I have a friend whose d-in-law believes in constant physical contact with young children. ALWAYS holding them and all three of them sleep in parents’ bed. I just can’t figure when they got the opportunity to get pregnant with the second and third!! Lot of nonsense.

Congratulations to you! You’re right. Parents do have new ideas about raising the kids these days. I’m just happy that my grandkids know the routines better than we do. They were huge help!

@DianneN This is true. Especially if you have family. My husband wants to retire at 62, (about a year from now) but he also hasn't been able to step back and ease off of working.

@kaylachan I hope he will be able to retire then. It’s not something most people ease into.

This brings back some very good memories:) I use to be the babysitter for Mari Lyn's four children(Aubrey hadn't been planned yet). Nathanial, their oldest was 12 years old, Taylor 11, Zachary 8 and Kaitlyn was 3. I loved being their babysitter!

@DianneN I'm sure the four-hour dinner was easier than your workout with the grandkids. And just as much fun.

The big reason we moved back to Indiana from Ohio was gpa and gma babysitting!!!!! it is a huge relief knowing parents there are to cover babysitting!

We have always lived too far to babysit, but have always helped out in a pinch. They had a nanny and a babysitter who is like a nanny. However, that was in NYC. Kind of hard now living in New Jersey, but their old nanny was willing to do the job. Poor thing fell off a curb and is recovering. When I say old, she’s 59.
