Taking part in a lamb-tasting research

We had an interesting experience today. Sixty people from our lifestyle village participated in a meat-tasting session run by a nearby university. The aim was to discover which cuts of lamb people liked the most.
We sat at little individual booths and were given seven samples of lamb. We had to give our opinion on taste, tenderness, juiciness and overall impression.
We weren’t all given the same sample at the same time and we weren’t allowed to talk to each other. For our efforts, the village will receive $1,000 which will go into the social fund to pay for bus trips, sausage sizzles, etc.
The photo is of Oscar, one of our pet sheep.

I must confess I've never eaten lamb, never even tasted it. For some reason I just can't bring myself to eat such a cute little animal. I realize this is a bit hypocritical of me since I actually love veal, particularly veal parmesan, which I know also comes from a cute baby animal but in my own defense I came to like veal before I'd ever actually stopped to think about where it came from if that makes no sense. I guess it's also because if you're going to eat lamb you say "lamb" as in "lamb chops" or whatever but if you're going to eat veal you don't say "baby calf".
Anyway, sorry for kind of drifting away from your actual topic! It does seem like a fun time and a great idea. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's really nice that the village will receive $1000.

The only time I have had lamb was at a chestnut festival in a kind of chestnut stew. Hearing opinions here, like those of @DaddyEvil are really enlightening.

Having grown up on a farm, where killing our own sheep was standard practice, and every farmer in the state was doing the same, it doesn't worry me to eat animals. But I totally understand that others feel very differently. Also, when it's all packaged up it's a bit easier to pretend it didn't come from a cute little lamb. I would never eat a pet

@GardenGerty I do think this study was 'real'. The Lamb Marketing Board asked the university to do some studies to try to increase the sale of lamb. I'm sure they fudge studies from time to time but you'd hope the university one was for real.

We used to go to the fall festivals held in the smaller cities in our area. One of our favorite things to eat at these was lamb burgers. (I've eaten lamb at other times but only want it while it's still hot straight from cooking. If lamb gets cold it tastes nasty. If it's re-heated, it tastes nasty.) The lamb burgers were always so delicious.
I hope you don't one day find out all the samples were the same cut, from the same lamb... I've seen studies like that. Usually, they're pretty funny.

@JudyEv If it was easy to tell the difference, then it was probably a real study.

@DaddyEvil As it was put on by the university on behalf of the Lamb Marketing Board, I tend to think it was a dinkum study.

@LindaOHio I like this one too which happened after they'd eaten their way into the bale.

Are sheep and goats the same? I've eaten a lot of goat meat and it makes my head dizzy

@JudyEv @Roviansyah There is a big difference between the taste of goat and sheep. Goat is tougher and has a kind of wild taste to it that sheep don't have.

Oscar poses for an Oscar winning poseif there was Oscar for photography.
That would have been a great experience especially for those who enjoy the lamb meat. It would be interesting to know the outcome of the research.

That is great your little village will benefit from your taking part in the lamb eating. Lamb is something I grew up having though I never really liked it. It was my Pop Pop's favorite. When Nana made it I enjoyed all the sides she had to go with it. I will get Mike lamb chops every now and again for him to enjoy. And I will enjoy whatever sides I make with it.
