The gift my brother-in-law doesn't know he gave us

For our Golden Wedding celebration, we had asked people not to bring gifts but Vince’s elder brother gave us some scratchies which yielded such a small amount of money that Vince bought a lottery ticket with it. This yielded a bigger amount – enough for this bottle of Cointreau. I mentioned in a recent post that we’d stayed up till 2.00am and ended the night with several nips of this very nice liqueur. So, although he doesn’t yet know it, my brother-in-law indirectly gave us a very acceptable gift. Have you ever had Cointreau?

My Dad used to like this, and as a result I have inherited a couple of bottles (because in fact he hardly ever drank). Yes I like it. It's a bit strong for me neat, but I like it in cocktails and also in liqueur coffee. And I just found this in case you need inspiration!

@Fleura My Dad also liked, I used it more for the pastries and cake than to drink, it's a bit too much sweet for me.

@LadyDuck Good idea, I wonder if it would work if we used it to 'feed' the Christmas cake?

@Fleura In my opinion it should work for the Christmas cake.

Oh yes, I always have a bottle of Cointreau at home, it is good, less expensive than Grand Marnier, so I use it to put the crêpes Suzettes on fire.

@JudyEv My husband asked for flambé banana for dessert today. I used rum for the banana.

A lot of our friends now say 'no presents' but some people like to give something, whatever they're told in the invite.

@DocAndersen We went to a 70th the other day. The people have been very good to us over the years and we did take a gift. We simply said that we didn't think they meant us!

@judyev Yes indeed. My wife’s rather partial to it (In appropriate amounts - I wouldn’t want to give the impression that she’s overly bibuous). It’s a bit sweet for me.

@JudyEv I think my favourite liqueur must be Sambuca even though it is powerfully sweet. A great digestive, often offered ‘on the house’ in Indian restaurants here but we know it’s hidden somewhere in the bill.

@JudyEv Buying a ticket is a gamble. You should thank your lucky stars for winning when you did. He ended getting something he wanted so it is all good, right?

Now we're older, there is nothing that we want and we'd rather people didn't spend money on us. If we are given a gift, we would accept it very graciously but we didn't want our guests to feel obliged to buy us a present.
