A perfect day for a rainbow! Do you still enjoy rainbows?

Our rain eased out of town today, but not without some last-gasp showers. The result was alternating periods of rain and sunshine--perfect for a rainbow. I didn't see one today with the kids, though the sprouts and I did do some good squirrel-watching. But on my home this evening, as I was heading East into a small shower, and the sun was thinking of starting to set, I saw a great rainbow directly in front of me. I slowed down to study it, and noticed that the longer wavengths (like red) were at the top, while she shorter wavelengths (like blue) were near the bottom. Violet was at the absolute bottom, it seemed. Any scientists out there who why the colors are distributed as they are? But I also just smiled and realized that a rainbow makes my day. If you are over five, do you still get a thrill when you see a really good rainbow?

Alas, I don't have any really good rainbow photos. Maybe I'll attach a generic one to this post later.

Yes I do. They are rare. I love it more, when I don't have to have someone point them out to me, or lie and say I see it when I don't.

@thehorse Only some poor, benighted, insensate can turn away from a rainbow.

Yesterday was my first in a long time. Well, I guess that makes sense given that we hadn't had rain since something like February.

Some raibows are hard to capture adequately in photos. I may add a generic rainbow photo to this post, but it's not the same...

@TheHorse I have seen pictures of rainbows on the computer and they are really nice. It would be nice to see a photo with the post but if you cannot then that is ok too.

@t100068 I think it has to do with the wavelength of different colors.

I wonder when I figured out that that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow was some kind of metaphor.

I love rainbows and still enjoy seeing them. I read once that there is a specific order of the colors but don't remember the explanation!

The reason why the colors of the rainbows are distributed as they are is not something short and easy to explain, but you can find the answer to your question consulting Wikipedia. I like rainbows so much, that I "create" them watering the garden in the sun.

@t100068 The rainbow is formed by sunlight entering water droplet. When you water the garden if you get the correct angle, you can see a small rainbow where the light hits the water droplets.

That's interesting. How does watering the garden in the sun create rainbows?

I love seeing rainbows. I remember when I was on vacation in Maui, Hawaii a while ago there were double rainbows there. Wonder what causes that to happen.

I'm not sure! I'm going to look up why the colors are in the order they are. Yesterday's rainbow was actually a double rainbow, but one beneath was very faint.
