Houses for insects

While we were in York, Western Australia, we visited a shop that was into all sorts of organic produce as well as having a lot of locally made rustic signs and other odds and ends. I was intrigued with the ‘houses’ you see in the photo. I’m sure you’ll all know what these are. They are insect houses and provide accommodation for various sized insects. We don’t have a lot of birds around our new house but maybe I could get some entertainment from these fancy little houses. Do you have one of these or know anything about them?

I've seen some videos on YouTube about them and from what I saw they are intended for beneficial insects that would help control the pesky ones. I know one is for lady bugs.

They'd probably become victims of those it was intended for ....... but you do have a good point.

I wonder how you stop the pesky ones from using the houses.

@JudyEv I dont know why you would want to attract some insects either.

I can't imagine how they'd be used really. What if an insect got bad neighbours?

I've heard of "roach" motels, designed to kill insects, but that's about it.

I thought everyone had one of those these days :-) We have one at the cottage in the woods. It's really enough places for them to live there, but it's interesting to watch. There are some really huge ones at the botanical garden, they're buzzing with life all summer. If you have insects staying there over winter you might want to place some netting in front of it. Big enough for the insects to get through, it's to stop birds taking them out during winter sleep.

@JudyEv We're all assuming the rest of the world is like the people living around us ;-) You wouldn't have one outside a flat here, but they're very common for normal houses and in parks.

You thought everyone would have one; I thought a few people might but it seems very few have so I guess we've all learnt something! Good idea about the netting.

Thanks for the link. I can't see how you'd stop 'bad' bugs moving in rather than good ones.

Many insects are very beneficial. You can't brand them all as bad.

@LadyDuck I wondered this. The insects would be in very close proximity to each other if they used the multiple species boxes.

@JudyEv People buy the strangest things. I have a granddaughter that is into bugs and begging my son to get her a bug house. I have to show him this.

What a unique item as an insect house, too good for an insect house. like mine when I was little, making a cricket house made of wood and very simple.

@JudyEv Yeah when I was little I went to look for crickets and made a simple house just to hear the sound, it sounded very strange but it really existed in the past

@judyev These we’re more use to me when I lived closer to the city. Out in the Styx the insects have plenty of accommodation but they’re still a great idea.
