We have white magnolias at our front door

We had a barbecue the other day at our new village barbecue. I’ve already posted about it. While I was there, I noticed the magnificent white magnolias that have been planted in the area. They are very pretty and are flowering at the moment. So this evening I walked across and took a photo of them. The photo of the tree doesn’t show the flowers very well. The single flowers look like tulips. I thought they were very beautiful. There is a poem ‘The White Magnolia Tree’ which would be recited on radio from time to time when I was young. One line was ‘and the white magnolia grew and grew’ but ‘grew’ would be stretched out ‘greww and grewww’ and now, whenever we see a white magnolia, either Vin or I will repeat the line ‘‘and the white magnolia grewww and grewww’. Ah well, small things amuse small minds.

That is really pretty, ours look just a bit different. I have a funny story about a magnolia too. Years ago, when I first moved down to Virginia, I saw these big white flowers on trees, and was wondering what they were...all of sudden the Country Music tune Magnolia Blossoms came into my mind. I thought to myself...hey those are magnolia blossoms...funny how music can trigger thoughts..I was right of course..

Ours open out like that but the buds I think are really lovely. Interesting about the song triggering your answer as I guess you didn't 'see' blossoms' when the song was sung. Unless it was on YouTube.

We had a huge magnolia tree on the side of our home. It was taller than our 3 story house and beautiful. I was heart broken when they com to check and it had to be cut because unsafe. I loved those big white flowers.

Our friends have a huge one in their garden too. I can understand that you would be sad to see yours taken down.

@JudyEv I was against taking it down, two gardeners came to check, the roots were not deep enough, it risked to fall on our home.

@LadyDuck In that case, there wasn't any option but to remove it. I'm sure it made a huge difference once it was gone. Was it blocking a lot of light.

So... you and Vince are planning on digging up a magnolia and planting it in your back yard?

@JudyEv When I was younger, I dug up a pine tree and planted it in my back yard... We lived in that house for years. Pretty loved to decorate it at Christmas time.

@DaddyEvil We always wanted to that on our little farm but we didn't get around to planting one and any there were there were a bit too big for us to decorate.

We might have once - when we were much younger and slightly more foolish. We're still pretty foolish but do know our physical limitations.

Love the white magnolia blooms on my tree. I have the saucer magnolia and the buds are like your photo then they open up to blooms larger than my hand.

I think a lot has to do with the humidity, where I am it's usually quite dry so they don't do well.

I know what you mean about being amused. Whenever I hear them say that there’s “a light chop” on the lake or bay waters on weather radios I listen to I say “chop chop.” Lovely magnolia!

@JudyEv — I noticed a lot of people noted the trivia about Mike Nesmith today that his mother invented White-Out. Of all the things to remember about someone who had such a long career….. I remember the “chop chop” from an episode of Hogan’s Heroes, where Klink kept taunting Hogan with “chop, chop, chop.” At the end Hogan got him back.

It's beautiful. We don't have magnolia trees in the north. They're only in the south or warmer climates.

it's a beautiful flower even though it's not fully bloomed, it will be very beautiful if they bloom, do you already have that type of flower at home?
