Would you like a little Hanky Panky?

Somewhere tucked in the back of a drawer I have a few handkerchiefs. I can't remember the last time I used one because in another drawer, where they are very accessible, I have a box of tissues. There was a time when a pretty handkerchief was always to be found in my handbag, no longer. They used to be welcome Christmas presents with some embroidered design in one corner. They were soft and carefully ironed. Tissues have taken over now. Tissue do not have to be laundered, just thrown away. Perhaps that is their charm in our throwing away world. There was a time in movies, when well mannered men offered large spotless handkerchiefs to women when they had been moved to tears. No longer. A box of tissues would not have quite the same effect because no one offers a tissue in modern films. Heroines in films have to be tough these days. No handbags in sight and certainly no hanky inside if needed. I

I always have my handbag with me, I still have a drawer full of handkerchiefs, but I use tissues all the time. I know it is a very bad habit, bad for the trees, bad for the garbage we produce every day. May be one day they will be banned as they are doing with plastic.

Pretty doesn't own a purse. Her mom carried around everything in a suitcase sized handbag that I constantly teased her about carrying... (Pretty's mom was always trying to make me carry it for her... I kept telling her to leave it in the car if she wasn't going to carry it. One day she handed it to me while we were shopping. I set it on the floor. We were two stores away when she finally noticed I wasn't carrying it. She started yelling that it had all our money in it. I pointed out my wallet is always safely in my back pocket, so her purse only had her money in it. She never tried to make me carry it again. ) Any time Pretty needs to carry something, it always ends up in my pocket. All her ID and other cards are in my wallet. *sigh*

@41combedaleroad My father who is 90 and (isolated) in a care home asked me to get him some handkerchiefs. I asked him if he meant a box of tissues and he was quite put out. Apparently tissues are for women so proper handkerchiefs had to be procured.
