Two Days In A Row Is A Bit Much

I found that working at the boutique two days in a row is a little too much. I think the real killer was getting up at 6:30 am--something I'm not used to anymore. I also missed staying up late the night before. I worked the morning shift on Tuesday and the afternoon shift on Wednesday. Tuesday was a slow day and we were not that busy. I was alone in the store for most of the day with the owners just popping in to check on things. I would have 30 minutes of quiet and then a steady flow of customers. It was a nice pace and gave me time to straighten up displays and also take photos to post on our Facebook page. Wednesday, I worked alone all afternoon. We were fairly busy with customers all afternoon. I also had a few of the "weird" or "oddball" things that took up more time. For instance, I had a customer interested in one of the wreaths that one of our vendors make. I took the wreath done and there was no price tag. That is very unusual, but it happens. I tried calling the vendor and got no answer. I assumed she worked outside the home and sent her a text message along with a photo of th wreath with no price. This wreath was all the way at the top and I had to get the hanger stick to get it down. The hanger stick was over by the custom t-shirts and hanging on a Command clip with a couple of t-shirts. I took the hanger off and in the process the hanger falls along with the t-shirts to the floor. To make a long story short, the lady left the boutique before our vendor got back to me with the price. I put a note on the wreath and went to put it back on the wall with the hanger. Nope, I'm too short to get the wreath back on the hook. So I went to put the clip back up for the t-shirts. Nope, no more sticky on the back of the hook. So I put the t-shirts on rack and leaned the hanger up in the corner. I also had to send messages to vendor that customer left but would check back and another message to co-owner that normally checks in daily. I had several phone calls or in store incidents that needed messages and problems worked out. I also had a young lady that came in and needed help in choosing an outfit for a date in New Orleans. She was excited because she had never been before. We picked out a leopard skirt and a black top and she was headed to the dressing room when I told her there may be something on the 75% off clearance rack. I found a pair of black pleather pants in her size and she love them so put the skirt and top back and we found her a blouse on the clearance rack also. She was pleased with her outfit and also bought a lipstick from the batch that I had left on the counter to take photos of. We laughed because her lipstick ended up being the most expensive item. She told me she wants to come back and get more makeup and wants to come when I'm working. I gave her my business card to keep in touch with me. I love working in the boutique and making new friends and acquaintances. But I was on my feet all afternoon constantly between helping customers in the store, and putting clothing back up left in the dressing rooms. I'm not going to schedule any more days like that. It happened because one vendor had to go out of state, and I volunteered to take her shift. I don't mind helping out like that, but I won't be purposely scheduling like that again. I was a little bit tired today! Photo Credit: ©2022 Karen Gros, All rights reserved

Most customers are fun to work with and then you have something happen that makes no sense or just makes you tired... until the next fun customer comes in.

Very true. They come in with some wild requests. I have a teenager that came in for a purple, gold or black fluffy jacket the other day. The only color we had in that style was tan. Oh well, can't win them all.

@DaddyEvil The real funny ones are when a grown lady comes in and tries on a dress styled and sized for the teens. It's hard to keep a straight face on those. And then to be nice when they exit the dressing room and you already know the dress didn't fit.

I think it would be very hard for me to be on my feet all the day long. I would love to work in a boutique, but at my age I need to sit down.

That is why I don't work all day! I could never make it. Our shifts are four hours with coming in 15 to 30 minutes early. I come in earlier if I have products to tag and add to display. I have also learned to make sure I wear comfy shoes or bring a back up pair to change in to!

@LadyDuck Yep, on busy days I usually pop a couple of Aleve's and that gets me through the afternoon.

@kareng - Comfortable shoes are a must if you have to stay on your feet for many hours. My problem is my back, I get terrible back pain if I stand still for too long.

At least you weren't bored. I can tell by what all happened you would be tired after a couple of days like that.

Thanks for the newsy update. I am unable to stand more than a minute; but if I could, I wouldn't want to spend that much time on my feet!

@LindaOHio Yes, and I think that will continue. I really think we are all in for it starting off 2022. Sales are up (almost $3,000.00) for yesterday's sales. Those numbers are what we were hitting before Christmas!! As long as they keep only one person on a shift, we will be running. Not complaining--just saying they are not seeing what is going on with a clear head.

Being on your feet all day is not good. Take care of yourself. What a nice and neat display.

I can't blame you. Even if you enjoy your job, that can be hard getting used to. At least you can rest and relax.

I was just getting used to the once a week! But I know now that I don't think it is for me so will keep my afternoon shifts. The only time I don't love them is during the winter months when it gets dark so early and I'm late getting home after the later holiday hours.

Yes, I am one of the older vendors there so a little harder for me than the late 20 and 30 year olds.

waking up at 6:30 was the reason why I went self-employed. Don't worry, you will get used to it. I never thought working in the boutique is really this stressful sometimes. is this your first time to work in a boutique?

I have not done retail since I was in high school and worked in the gift wrapping department during the holidays!! I don't have to work a morning shift and won't be doing many of them. I'm not a morning person, never have been, and never will be one.
