A List Is A Must

These days l cannot go grocery shopping without a detailed list in hand. Not only do l list every item l plan to buy - but the price as well- that way I will have an idea of how much l am spending and not go too far off budget. Oh!- l really miss the good old days when l would pick up random items and add to my cart. Over the past year or so have you made any changes in the way you grocery shop? What about indulgences- have you found it necessary to cut back on those? Pixabay image

No. If anything, we spend more at the grocery store than we ever did before the pandemic began. (We are stocking up on non-perishable items and storing the excess in our garage. Just in case Zombies start becoming a real thing. )

That is the sensible thing to do -- l would do it if l could afford it. Thankfully where l live there is a lot of fresh produce on our land, so if things get worse l won't starve. Worse - like a world war 3.

@Kandae11 Pretty and I each make a list every time we go shopping. I write down things we actually need at the time and her list is for non-perishable foods we'd like to have on hand. (I'd bet we have enough on-hand that we could manage for months without going hungry.)

@DaddyEvil On the subject of storing up food l recall there was a Mylotter, l am not sure if it was Angie? - Anyway she stored jars and jars of produce from her garden, and l would jest that she was preparing for a famine.

I always write a list before I go to the supermarket. I don't remember when I started doing this. It's a reasonable thing to do. You won't forget anything and won't buy things you don't really need. As I know the layout of the supermarket by heart, I write the things down in the order they're on the shelves so that I don't have to zigzag.

Yes, it's better to do that. I always try to make a list but most of the time I forget things to include in the list and have to go back to the market to buy that thing.

Good idea. In order not to zigzag l group the items on my list - like baked goods together, all canned stuff together, toiletries, etc. .

My memory is awful so I have to have a list with me or I won’t remember half of what I need to buy. 30 miles one way means I don’t want to forget anything or I’ll have to wait a week or more before I go shopping again to pick it up. I make a list on my phone and through the week until I go shopping I add more things to it.

Me too, I can't rely on my memory. It's really better to jot it down.

@Kandae11 Well same here. It's not getting any cheaper anywhere. We better start farming our own crops.

Problem is, the prices seem to be a bit higher everytime l visit the supermarket - and l end up way over budget.

I always go with a list, I also did before. Now I do not want to stay inside the store for a very long time, I fear the virus.

@Kandae11 - My husband had to be admitted to the ER twice last year, they checked everyone before letting them him, I felt safe for him.

@LadyDuck l hope he is doing better now. I worry about the fact that the doctor or nurse checking me could have the virus--some of them refuse to be vaccinated. I am overdue for my eye exam but l keep putting it off. The doctor has to get very close during an eye exam.

That's good you use a list. Prices are always changing here so I never know how much I'll be spending. I hope for the best. I've used lists, but mostly, I go without.

I used to carry just enough money for the things I went to buy and so I never needed a list. We often buy small quantities so if it's five items we just calculate and carry enough. But if we need more things then we write a list. I personally don't have the tendency to buy something I did not plan to buy.

I shop frequently, so having a list isn't really a necessity for me. If I forget something, I will just buy it the next time I am out. I also have a lot here so even if it something I need for a recipe or something I can usually find a substitute.

The ideal situation is to ensure that if you run out of certain items you can substitute with something else.
