Hot Cocoa Bombs For After Dinner Treat

I brought home two Cocoa Bombs from the boutique the other day. The vendor that supplied treats either pulled out of the store (which seems unlikely since we have a six month least on space) or was asked to leave. I feel the later was what really happened as she never kept her area stocked or restocked with current treats for the holiday, etc.
When treats are expired they go to the kitchen for workers to snack on when they work. So I snagged one for hubby and myself and we tried one out tonight.
If you have never seen them they are made with milk chocolate, a round ball that is hollow in the center. The center is packed with hot cocoa mix, and sometimes dehydrated marshmallows. The outside top of the bomb is decorated with icing or mini sugar treats. You put the whole thing in a cup of cold milk and microwave it or melt it down on the stovetop. We chose to nuke them.
We decided to half one of the bombs. I knew there was more than one tablespoon of mix inside. My husband is diabetic, so he has to watch the sugar intake. Splitting the bomb cut the sugar in half for him.
I was a bit disappointed in the treat myself. This bomb had Swiss Miss instant mix in it or an off brand mix instead of cocoa--the real dea.. There was not much flavor at all for almost two tablespoons of mix. Plus half of the milk chocolate that the bomb was made of should have given us both plenty of chocolate flavor. It did not. These bombs were priced at $6.00 each which is the going price for these homemade treats.
I would not have been happy if I had paid $6.00 for that treat. I am guessing that the store got some complaints, and the vendor was asked to leave the store.
Well, that's my story for tonight. Have you ever had a Cocoa Bomb Treat? Did you like it? How much did yours cost?

My daughter made those for us a few years back. Honest?
It was cocoa. Her making the gift was special but it wasn't super impressive.
I was at my sons shortly before he moved to Oregon that same year and he hadn't even drank his yet.
He asked if I wanted one. I went and sat down and he brought it to me.
I sipped it and right away I knew something was different.
He had put a shot of Bailey's in it and man was it good!

I havent had them. I only paid 10 dollars for one as a gift and it included a very pretty mug and I think it had a decorative spoon in it also.

@wolfgirl569 These were made by the sweet vendor that used to be at the boutique. It has to be why she is gone. They were not the least bit impressive, and I have heard a lot of people say they are delicious.

I see them sold here but I've never bought it. I don't know how one of it costs but I'm sure it's less than $2

I've never seen or heard of those before. At that price, Pretty might have tried one but I wouldn't waste my money on it. *shrug* (Pretty claims I waste money... )

I’ve never had a cocoa bomb treat, which is surprising given how much I love chocolate. Maybe I can try one soon.

@moffittjc Don't do that; just make sure that the one you get can be vouched for as being GOOD! So many people are making them around here and turning a quick buck on them. I say fine for quality; but don't make one that cost you $1 and charge $6 or more and the flavor is just not there.

@kareng Thanks for the warning. I’ll make sure to keep my expectations low when I finally get around to trying one. Lol

I have tried them, like you I was not impressed. I make my own hot chocolate mix most of the time, because my kids and grands like it so much. I can see why, because it has LOTS of powdered sugar in it, which dissolves right away. I try not to think about how many calories are in it, I don't have it very often.

@MarieCoyle Yes, the mix would be much better with cocoa mix instead of an instant mix where the directions tell you to add water.

@kareng
You have all that in hot chocolate bombs, I just make the mix from ingredients.

I've never tried a cocoa bomb and would never pay that much. I'm sorry yours were such a disappointment. Have a good Sunday.
