An over-decorated Christmas cake!

Meant to show you this before - this is what happens when you let the family loose with the Christmas cake decorations! The girls are not keen on eating Christmas cake, and my partner and I can never agree on what sort and how much icing it should have (in my opinion only the barest minimum to keep the marzipan from drying out, while in his opinion only the thinnest possible layer of marzipan is needed to make the thick layer of icing stick!) But anyway we make one every year so that we can all stir the mixture and make a wish, as is traditional, and then when the time comes we can decorate it. This year we all went a bit crazy with the decorations. Everyone wanted to add their personal favourite Father Christmas (or two) - we ended up with ten! One with a list, one with a sack, one bringing an armful of gifts, one with a candle, one on a toboggan, one going down a chimney, one riding a reindeer - all different styles and eras. Then on top of that the cake ended up with a small forest, a herd of reindeer, several snowmen, a house, some Christmas roses and poinsettias, a robin and a few ‘Merry Christmas’ slogans. Several of those decorations date from my childhood and a few even from my mother’s childhood (almost a hundred years ago now!) Then a few gold sugar balls were sprinkled around for good measure. The end result was certainly festive but a bit difficult to cut! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

I see you are still stuck in the Christmas holiday blues. Well hope the cake tasted good even though it was over decorated.

We still have a wedge of cake left to eat. Once that's gone it feel like Christmas really is over.

Now I know why Santa didn't bring Pretty and I any presents this last Christmas! You trapped him on your cake! I would agree with your partner on the thickness of the icing, although I don't like marzipan. *shrug* The cake is very festive looking.

Icing and marzipan? Oh, my! Yum yum yum! The Christmas cake I got from Costco doesn't have either, just a nice glaze over fruit and nuts. And the cake is full of fruit and nuts, more so than actual cake.

Yes you're right, Christmas cake is basically a big bowl of dried fruits infused with a little spirit/liqueur and then stuck together with the bare minimum of cake mixture!

I agree that this is a bit over decorated. I usually make a chocolate yule log, that I decorate, but I keep it to a minimum. My husband dislike marzipan as well as icing, but he like the chocolate mousse that cover the yule log. I do not know if I have a photo, I am going to check.

@Fleura I like marzipan, my husband cannot stand marzipan. I even skipped to add it to my Christmas Stollen cake.

Just a bit I love marzipan, I can just eat it on its own, no need for cake.

Oh my word it looks like you have got a Christmas rave going on there. To be honest l do not like icing but l like a good piece of Christmas cake. After my last years effort of a tropical Christmas cake l didn't bother this year as l was away on a cruise.
