An entertaining car

When we moved to Perth, Western Australia, back in May, we decided to buy a new car to replace my very small Hyundai. We have a four-wheel-drive to tow the caravan and we use the Kia Cerato for shopping, visiting, etc. We were a bit surprised to find that the Cerato doesn’t have GPS or a CD player. The salesmen said it was because everyone uses their phones for such services. The phone connects to the car’s system somehow. It’s all a bit beyond me.
You can choose what type of ‘voice’ you have for the GPS – male/female, what type of accent, etc. At present, we have a throaty American gangster-type voice but he is quite entertaining. If you sit in the car in the garage with it idling for too long, he’ll say ‘Let’s get this thing on the road. We’re sitting ducks out here’. Another of his favourites is ‘Roundabout up ahead. Stay frosty.’ But my favourite is ‘Speed camera detected up ahead. This could be a trap. Let’s keep a low profile.’
Does your GPS, if you have one and you use it, keep you entertained?
Photo is of us in front of our new car. I must take on of the car ‘unwrapped’ one day.

I have an app called Waze, and you can pick the voices it uses to give you directions. My favorite was Elvis: “Hey baby, turn right. You’ve arrived. Thank you. Thank you very much.”

We use the GPS on my phone and have the voice set for an Englishman named "Lee". We've used it so long that we call our car Lee and say the GPS is the car's brain. We get the giggles sometimes at the way he pronounces some of the street names.
Otherwise, no, I just want Lee to get me to my destination. I don't need him telling me about the "Fish and Chips" stand on the next corner.

@JudyEv I totally understand. That's like the "jogging buddy" that Pretty uses on her phone. As she's jogging along, it tells her all kinds of funny things. Usually there's a zombie chasing her and she needs to go faster until she leaves the zombie behind.
I don't believe I'd like zombies chasing me, even if it is meant to help me keep up a pace of speed my pace up...

Sometimes we get a heck of a fright if he hasn't said anything for a while then comes out with a stern warning. Then endurance riders now have watches (and their phones of course) which pinpoint where they are. It's handy if they come off on-course and their horse gets away or whatever.

@JudyEv I have a cheaper watch. It records my route and counts steps and heart rate. If I want to know where I am, I have to connect it with my phone, but since the phone can do anyway, I haven't bothered. What is handy is that I upload all the watch data and have a record of how far I have walked/cycled and how active I've been. I have records going back a couple of years

That's a terrific picture of the two of you. Your GPS is hilarious. We have one but never installed it.

I own a 2018 Hyundai Elantra which I like very much. It still uses a CD player. Since I make my own CD's that's still a plus. I'm Not usually excited about using the latest and greatest technology, so I think I'll enjoy my car for a few more years. I would think with all that newer technology talking to me and all the dashboard gadgets to look at I'd probably get distracted and get in an accident Anyway, good luck with the car and enjoy the entertainment P.S. that speed trap thingamajig might come in handy!

I loved my Excel and it was a 1998 model. Only 2-door so not as convenient in the city if we want to take friends somewhere with us. I'm not fussed about the technology either but I have to admit the GPS through the phone is very useful. I find the 'stuff' distracting too so I just try to ignore most of it. lol

Our first GPS was given by a family member in Canada who had somehow acquired two of them. The kids and I had entirely too much fun disobeying the voice. We turned when we were supposed to go straight, and went straight when we were supposed to turn. It sounds like yours has a much greater stock of responses.
The down-side of our GPS was that on our way home, we crossed out of Ohio and into Kentucky...and drove out of the range of maps that were built into the GPS. That must have been 14-15 years ago now.

Cars have come a long way. My husband and I had to buy iphones to make the most out of ours. And, yes, Siri can be quite entertaining when she misunderstands us.

It amazes me how they know so much and can get us wherever we want to go.

@judyev I do hope there's a car under that wrapper. I have a friend who threw the GPS out the car window because the woman on it sounded very cross when she was ordering the driver where to go and my friend got very upset. Her husband got very cross but for another reason.

Really? That's a very funny story. We sometimes decide to do a detour. The poor old GPS must get very fed up with us and has to forever 'recalculate' to try to get us home. I'm always a bit surprised that there isn't even a hint of exasperation in the voice.
