Next month I am going on a cruise to the arctic circle right at the top of Norway in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Northern lights. It very much depends on whether you get to see them depending on cloud covering.
This is going to be somewhat different to the type of cruise I usually go on as it is likely to be much colder. I don't mind the cold so much but l am sorting out much warmer clothes than l would normally take with me. Jumpers, thermal socks, gloves, hats waterproofs, and boots not to mention a thick waterproof wind proof coat which will take up a lot of room.
They are a very interesting phenomena usually only seen in the far north or far south of the earth nearer to the poles. They are caused by tiny particles coming from the suns solar winds then coming into into contact with the earths upper atmosphere & the magnetic fields push them in either a North or South direction.
At times they can be seen in Scotland, Canada, Norway and inside the arctic circle. There are also the Southern lights called Aurora Australis which car be seen from New Zealand,Tasmania and the Antarctic.
It was Galileo Galilei who gave them the name "aurora borealis" in 1619. They are named after the Roman Goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek God of the north wind, Boreas — the earliest suspected record of the northern lights is in a 30,000-year-old cave painting in France. The Chinese described them in 163 BC.
Pretty amazing don't you think? Have you ever seen them?

I am looking forward to it & l hope to get to see them too. Many people are unlucky if it is too cloudy. I will keep my phone constantly with me so l can whip it out & snap away if l don't have my camera with me.

@Gillygirl Good thinking. I could sneak food back from the restaurant & order room service. I am sure they wouldn't notice.

My daughter saw them when she flew to Iceland. Lucky for her she was in the cockpit for the landing so she had a super view.

That's awesome you'll get a chance to see them.
I saw them once on a fluke when they were seen as far south as Green Bay when I was a kid. Every once in a while the weather is just right for it. The few times recently I could have had the opportunity, I was either asleep or there was cloud cover. I hope that doesn't happen for you and you get a great sight of them.

Like the galaxy pictures that are colored in, the Northern Lights are not like the speeded up video you see on the news, barely a distant hue of green..

@garymarsh6 My friend had set her heart on visiting St Petersburg too. Unfortunately she has metastatic cancer so if she can't go now she probably never will.

I saw them one summer night. I live in Idaho and it was quite lovely. Usually, you can only see them if you are more northern and up in Alaska. I was neither.

I believe that is been known to see them once in a while in Michigan. I live in the middle of the state and I'm not sure whether they can be seen this far south. I'm not sure that it's colorful like your picture.
