I heard on the AP news a short while ago that Russia has launched attacks in the Ukraine. What will this mean for the world at large? Not the best news to awaken to.

I hope this illegal action prompts NATO to accept Ukraine as a member and starts an air campaign on Russian positions today. It's obvious to the world now that Russia is attempting to reunite the former Soviet Bloc. Up until now, I believed it was political theater to drive up fuel prices and to discourage Ukraine from seeking a NATO alliance. It's much more than that now. Putin needs to be stopped before Romania and Bulgaria fall. Sanctions alone won't stop Russia. It's a time to meet force with force.

I wasn't quite sure of the politics behind it all-- now you have enlightened me. We are already seeing soaring oil prices.Rising food prices. I hope this stops before things get worse.

I was hoping diplomatic talks would have kept it from happening.

@Sreekala In 1938,Hitler conquered Austria,No one believed the World War 2 will happen.Everyone thought Hitler will stop his invasion. The peace has come. Now Putin will conquer Ukraine soon,No one believes the World War 3 will come. But like Hitler,Putin won't stop his evil tentacles until he becomes the King of World. The only way to stop the World War 3 is USA and Europe surrender to Putin and submit to his autocracy. Then the world war 3 won't happen, but whole human being will lose the freedom and democracy forever

Russia is destroying the military targets in Ukraine. I agree this is nothing good, should have Western Nation agreed not to accept Ukraine in the NATO, they would have been spared.

@Kandae11 We already know that the price of Gas and many other products will increase of more than 40%. Of course Russia is not too far not to decide to bomb the European country that should decide an action to stop them demilitariting Ukraine.

Unfortunately, it has started. We're a world at war again. The lines are being drawn. Allies chosen, and shots fired.

I have heard that l out of every 10 million barrels of oil distributed around the world comes from Russia. Oil prices have already skyrocketed and l shudder to think what will happen in another few months with regards to the cost of utilities, food, travel, etc.

Yep. Unfortunately it has started. It means a mess for the world, I think, because it may have an impact to some extent on the oil supply. This is not the time for that of course since oil is a large contributing factor to the massive inflation everyone is already suffering. It is what it is, I guess. For whatever that is worth.

So oil was in short supply before this conflict?

@Kandae11 Well, not exactly. It is complicated. I don't want to get too political here, but in this case it is almost unavoidable. When Trump was president, he opened up U.S. oil with his energy policy. This made the U.S. #1 in export of oil, and forced OPEC and other oil supplying countries to fall in line with prices and took away a lot of the control that they had over oil. When Biden became president one of the very first thing he did, within hours, was to sign an executive order completely shutting down American oil and returning power and control to OPEC and other oil supplying countries, making the United States once again energy dependent. It is not the only factor that drove gas prices higher. But it was a very large contributing factor. Now, because U.S. oil is pretty much 'out of the loop' on oil supply under Biden's policy, everyone else controlling oil will be able to do what they want—on top of that Russia, another major oil supplier can use its oil in retaliation for sanctions by NATO countries either cutting off oil supply altogether or greatly tightening it. This could lead to massive spikes in the cost of oil, disruptions in the oil supply chain, and a lot more other things. It's just not a good situation to be in right now, and I see no intention of Biden reversing course and putting the U.S. back into the oil game, because in part he would have to admit that Trump's policy actually worked. And while that would be good for the American people and the world that would benefit from U.S. oil, the administration has its own personal agenda it prefers to maintain. And so, we will all suffer. I ALSO believe that had Trump still been in office, Putin would not have invaded Ukraine in the first place.
