Ukraine War: Sanctions Dont' Seem to Affect Russia

It is getting almost a month since Russia invaded Ukraine. As I had expected the Western powers which means NATO did not come to the help of Ukraine and all they did was pass economic sanctions on Russia. I had a feeling the sanctions are not going to have any effect and I am proved right because the Russian invasion has not stopped. In addition, the Western powers are not united and Germany and France are continuing to buy gas from Russia.
Today I read the startling news that some American banks have allowed Russia to pay back their debt in dollars so I really do not know what is the meaning of the sanctions.
China in particular is not part of the sanctions and it is continuing to trade in Yuan the Chinese currency. It's all looking very murky to me but one thing is very clear Ukraine is not something for which the Western powers are going to risk their civilization by going to war with Russia.

I have heard of that. And I have also heard that some countries still buy from Russia.

@marguicha Europe buys from Russia because they have NO natural gas and NO gasoline for the cars if they do not. One of our politicians is visiting Qatar now to try to get natural gas from them. I hope we can get rid of Russia.

It only hurts the average citizen of Russia, which is also a bad way to try and win the "hearts and minds".

@madan02 The problem I have with this sentiment is that Ukraine is Ukraine. Not Russia. Putin is not in charge of Ukraine. Ukraine is. If Russia does not want Ukraine to enter NATO that is their opinion, but not their right to impose it nor to attack the country over it.

It is the people who suffer from the intensification of contradictions. The people also pay for the rise in oil prices caused by the sanctions against Russia.

So far I have to agree with you that the sanctions on Russia is definitely not going to work for Russia to ceasefire on the current war. Instead it has brought about ramifications to the economies of the countries in the EU community with alarming rising costs on energy and oil.
