Did You Know That is Rude?

I just read this article about where you could be being rude and not know it. Get a loud of some of these things:
* Setting in the back seat of a taxi in countries like Scotland, the Netherlands and Australia will make the driver think you feel you are better than him.
* In Greece and South America giving the old thumbs up is as bad as the middle finger. Just a nod is best.
* In Japan, Spain, Italy, and France it is not nice to add any condiments
to the food you are served. I can sort of understand this one.
* Eating everything on your plate in Russia, Thailand and China will give the impression that the host didn't give you enough food.
Interesting how different some cultures are.

That is what common sense would tell me.

@Milo8855 .......I would hope so. That is how I would feel if someone ate all the food I prepared.

In Spain, Italy and France it depends which food. Of course you do not add condiments to a grilled steak, but you always serve the salad seasoned. I do not know about Japan, but in the Japanese restaurants the sauces are always served separately, as we do in Italy. In Italy it's forbidden to sit near the driver in a taxi.

Some Americans put ketchup on everything. That would make me feel bad if I were the cook. A good and well-seasoned dish should not be messed with. I can see where a cook would feel bad if someone did put some condiments on the food they were served.
I like to sit upfront in a taxi because it is easier for me to get in and out.

@celticeagle I noticed when there that many bury everything in ketchup, rude toward the cook for sure.
The old taxi in London do not even had the front seat, there was an empty space where to place the luggage.

@celticeagle I think it's awful to use ketchup on everything but I have seen it done. I am not a fan of ketchup.

Yes, and so many mothers teach their children to finish their plates. Or they used to anyway. Don't waste food.

These silent communications can be very powerful. Smart people will be advised to learn so they do not come across as rude and bumbling Americans.

When those people come here, they are often surprised what we consider rude, here.

Thank you for the interesting information, I agree I once read an article that gave good advice. It said before going to another country read up on the customs and the courtesy rules it will save you a lot of embarrassment and problems in the long run. Japan particularly has lots of odd customs and traditions and it is good to know them,

It only makes sense. I have seen some docs about Japan. Also, there was a movie about geishas I found really interesting.
