Fake German Heiress

Recently I watched "Inventing Anna" on Netflix. Based on the real/false story of Anna Sorokin AKA Anna Delvy - a real person who conned some of the upper crust of society in New York.
While I mostly only know about this case from the Netflix mini series - I still can't figure HOW she got people to buy her bull pucky story.
According to the docu-series - She wasn't a particularly nice or kind person. She met the world with a pout and acted entitled. Nothing good enough, complain about everything, everything met with a disapproving glance or an "I guess it will do" attitude, even if it was cream of the crop items, clothes, rooms or yachts. She pulled that off by pretending that she had a huge trust fund in Germany and that her dad was wealthy but she couldn't access her money on account of international banking rules. So whenever anyone would ask she would just say that she would pay them back but this or that hang up due to transferring money internationally. But hang in there because her dad is wealthy. The amount of people, including top banks that bought this is just amazing to me.
As for Sorokin - she got caught, went to jail, is now out and hosting art shows featuring her sketches. She was a consultant on her own Netflix series and she used that money to pay back what she owed to people. I wouldn't doubt she could actually get a legitimate business out of all the press this case has generated.
As for me? Will you send me some money? I just need a few hundred thousand to finance my business idea

Some con artists are very good at play acting a role of a person who is down on their luck in terms of having money to use.

It amazes me that this one did the opposite, pretended to be wealthy in order to get people to give her money.

Amazing, I agree. To con people out of money she pretended to have money. Interesting. True. Some of the wealthy seem so very clueless.

I want to send you some money but I'm only barely a multi-trillionaire. Did I ever tell you that some of my yachts only have two swimming pools?

Only 2 pools? A mere pauper. Over here we call that a canoe.

Yes. Amazingly enough she's out now though. But true, at least she did the right thing and paid up those that she cheated. She has a huge fan base. I'm not sure why.

True, that's what my mom says too, for everyone that fell for her schemes, there are a lot who didn't
