The Scam That Went Terribly Wrong.

Heard on the news about a 27 - year old sales clerk who with the help of two friends faked her kidnapping in an effort to obtain a large sum of money from her family -- 1 million dollars to be exact. A chilling video which showed a man holding a gun to her head was sent to the family. However it was ' a rude awakening' for the young lady when her family refused to pay the ransom. Did they not care whether she lived or died? She eventually decided to 'release' herself and reported that the kidnappers had let her go. Anyway, the saga was far from over. The police who had been investigating the matter arrested her on charges of extortion and creating public mischief. Now l am thinking , she must have known that her family were wealthy enough to pay that ransom, otherwise would she have pulled such a stunt? The other question is - why did they not pay up? Perhaps they did not like her very much or they guessed the whole thing was a fake. What do you think? Would you have paid to save your family member? Pixabay image

May be the family suspected something. We cannot pay a ransom here, the police immediately block the money to avoid that the kidnappers will continue doing the same with other people. It is the same in Italy. Back in the 70s many people have been kidnapped in Italy, until the Government decided to "block the money" so that the families could not pay. Believe it or not, the kidnappings ended.

@Kandae11 I know that several people already faked their own kidnapping and they have all been caught by the police.

I see, l do not know if it is the same in Jamaica where the incident took place. The police say this this is the third such incident for the year.

@LadyDuck Ha, ha. That shows that they are amateurs really, not seasoned criminals. Maybe the are not even considering that what they are doing is a crime.

I think, but don't know for sure, that the police here will not allow a ransom to be paid once they get involved in a kidnapping.

@Kandae11 Contacting the police is normally the first thing people do. The police take over and you follow their directions. And hope you get your loved one back alive.

@DaddyEvil Sometimes the kidnappers warn that the police should not be contacted.

If that is the case in Jamaica maybe the young lady was not aware of it. It would seem she and her friends did not plan it properly, naturally the family members would have contacted the police.

Probably the family already had a hint that this would happen. Maybe they are wealthy but her parents know she's up to something bad.

This is very strange. The family doesn't sound as if it is very close-knit and surely they must be wealthy for the girl to try to pull such a stupid stunt. I hope she learns a lesson from this.

The video she sent them was shown on the TV news, l saw it and it looked pretty scary. Still her family members weren't convinced, l wonder what kind of relationship she has with them.

I would pay for my kids if I had the money, I guess she thought they cared more for her than they actually did.

My guess would be that the family and perhaps the police smelt a rat. It must have been obvious in some way that this was staged and not realistic. Shame on anyone for wasting their family's emotions and time as well as that of the police.

I would have liked to know if the family members were parents, granndparents or aunt and uncle - the report did not say. My belief is the same as yours , the young woman's previous behaviors could influence their reaction to the kidnap story.

I am not that rich to pay a ransom. My elder son was kidnapped too in 2002. We had to take the help of police and with God's grace the kidnnapers dumped him in a paddy field in an unconscious state. He came to his senses and asked a person walking in the beach to ring us up. My husband went and fetched him.

That is strange. Maybe the family was already suspicious of that kidnapping. Surely, there is more story behind why the family was not paying.

My thoughts exactly. What l am curious about is that both reports -- in the print media and electronic - did not mention if the family members were her parents.

I think that they will not tolerate a family member commited in a crime if they have enough money to pay .
