The Scam That Went Terribly Wrong.

Heard on the news about a 27 - year old sales clerk who with the help of two friends faked her kidnapping in an effort to obtain a large sum of money from her family -- 1 million dollars to be exact.
A chilling video which showed a man holding a gun to her head was sent to the family. However it was ' a rude awakening' for the young lady when her family refused to pay the ransom.
Did they not care whether she lived or died?
She eventually decided to 'release' herself and reported that the kidnappers had let her go.
Anyway, the saga was far from over. The police who had been investigating the matter arrested her on charges of extortion and creating public mischief.
Now l am thinking , she must have known that her family were wealthy enough to pay that ransom, otherwise would she have pulled such a stunt?
The other question is - why did they not pay up? Perhaps they did not like her very much or they guessed the whole thing was a fake. What do you think? Would you have paid to save your family member?

May be the family suspected something. We cannot pay a ransom here, the police immediately block the money to avoid that the kidnappers will continue doing the same with other people. It is the same in Italy. Back in the 70s many people have been kidnapped in Italy, until the Government decided to "block the money" so that the families could not pay. Believe it or not, the kidnappings ended.

I think, but don't know for sure, that the police here will not allow a ransom to be paid once they get involved in a kidnapping.

@Kandae11 Contacting the police is normally the first thing people do. The police take over and you follow their directions. And hope you get your loved one back alive.

@DaddyEvil Sometimes the kidnappers warn that the police should not be contacted.

Probably the family already had a hint that this would happen. Maybe they are wealthy but her parents know she's up to something bad.

I would pay for my kids if I had the money, I guess she thought they cared more for her than they actually did.

I am not that rich to pay a ransom. My elder son was kidnapped too in 2002. We had to take the help of police and with God's grace the kidnnapers dumped him in a paddy field in an unconscious state. He came to his senses and asked a person walking in the beach to ring us up. My husband went and fetched him.

@Kandae11 Yes, I am very grateful to God for being so kind to me. The thought of it makes me shiver.

I think that they will not tolerate a family member commited in a crime if they have enough money to pay .

I think parents have a sixth sense about their kids and what they can get up to.
