For those of you who expressed interest, I thought I’d write about a couple of the films. One of the first we saw was ‘Compartment No. 6’, a Finnish film. Two strangers share a Russian train journey through the Arctic Circle and come to a better understanding of each other and of themselves. The bitter cold and snow-covered terrain was interesting to us and the storyline also held our interest.
What was of particular interest to us was the train itself. Some years ago three of us planned to cross Russia on the trans-Siberian railway. We were advised to travel ‘cattle class’ where the compartments were converted to sleeping bunks at night. The other option was a cabin for four but, if you were travelling alone, you could find yourself in a cabin with Russian soldiers intent on sharing their vodka with you.
The film gave good images of both options. The two protagonists shared a cabin but would have to traipse through the other compartments to get tea or hot water from the guard’s area. So we now have a good idea of how we might have travelled.
The photo is of a Finnish couch-surfer with Hercules.

That sounds like a great film. I am going to look it up to see if I can watch it.

I can't watch it, but I did see the trailer and it isn't a movie I would enjoy anyway.

@JudyEv The only train I have been on is what I call recreational trains, ones that take you on a tour of a city or to the next city. I never traveled to another state or across country on a train before. I think it would be interesting to do so.

@Carmelanirel2 It wasn't my pick of those we saw but I was interested in how the train was set up. Very different to here.

I don't know if it's available. Maybe the really new films have to be in theatres for a while before they can be downloaded. I don't know anything about how that happens. It did have subtitles which is just as well or we wouldn't hav understood any of it.

The trans - Siberia railway has really updated since then . l saw a documentary about travel on the Golden Eagles Trans - Siberia Railway and it was luxurious. Lovely dining areas, well dressed staff, private sleeping compartments - and you could also have breakfast in your 'room' if you didn't feel like going to the dining area.
I have always loved traveling on trains - not the high speed ones - and the documentary made me feel like taking a trip on one of those.

Sounds interesting. I've never tried long distance travel by train. Really want to try it some day.

It was pretty bleak in places but I guess a film can be bleak but still be interesting.

I would be interested in that movie just for the scenery alone.

There was another film set in Iran and the terrain there was so unlike anything I've ever seen. The NZ film had beautiful scenery too.

Ooh, that sounds so interesting! We don’t get “human stories” in America. All we get anymore are shoot-‘em-ups.

I love the photo. That film sounds very interesting I love films that are about travel. Do you remember the Orient Express? Well, I got to see the original in Riga, Latvia. We were taking a train ride and our train pulled up right next to the Orient Express, I had a desire to get out and take a look at it but then we would miss our train and the Orient Express began moving along its tracks, Boy, all those real curtains at those windows,

Sounds to be so interesting I do love Russian movies the way the actors in most cases put emphasis on their words.

I thought I recognized that good looking Herc here.
I would love to do a cross country rail trip here in Canada. It would be a delightful way to enjoy the views without having to enduring driving the long drive ourselves.
This film sounds like it gave you a pretty good idea of how that type of travel would be like.
