Not What I Had in Mind for International Dog Day

I think I've only written about this once, but we have a dog named Parker. A cute little mutt, but a royal pain in the ass. Anyway, it wasn't really our dog, but my daughter and I agreed to "temporarily" take ownership of him. He belonged to my ex-wife, and when she moved to south Florida at the beginning of the year, she couldn't take the dog with her, so my daughter agreed to keep him until my ex-wife could find a place that allowed pets, or bought a new home of her own.
Anyway, the dog was a rescue, and had severe anxiety and other neurological issues. Which is why I said above that he was a pain in the ass. He was on all sorts of medications to help him deal with his issues. None of them really worked. My daughter even tried sending him to a behavioral specialist, but that only had limited success. But, long story short, Parker ended up having kidney problems, and unfortunately a little more than a week ago started having kidney failure.
The unfortunate result was that we had to euthanize him yesterday, which coincidentally was international dog day. It was the most humane thing we could do to end his suffering, although it wasn't a choice we would have preferred. It's never easy putting down a family pet, and a decision we didn't take lightly.
I took the day off work to spend the last few hours with Parker before taking him to the vet for the procedure. My daughter originally was going to do it while I was at work, but I didn't want her to be alone with the dog at the end, and also alone at home afterward. So we did it together.
Like I said earlier, I wasn't particularly fond of the dog, but he still was a living, breathing creature, and I was sad to see him go. It hit me a little more emotionally than I thought it would.
Have any of you had to put down a pet before?

So sorry, but you did the humane thing.
We had to put Doodles down due to leukemia. A mobile vet, who put down his sister, did it in our family room. It was humane and necessary because he was in pain, not eating, and groaning. We were with him the entire time, and I still miss him terribly.

For about the last 3-4 days he had vomit and diarrhea constantly, one of the indicators his poor little kidneys were going downhill. He also wasn’t eating, and the vet had to give him fluids via IV each day. Clearly the poor dog was suffering.
Good to see you here Dianne!

It is a terrible decision to have to make, but it can often be the most humane decision. Nobody wants to see a loved and cherished pet suffer.

@nela13 That’s the only reason I could make such a tough decision. I didn’t want to see the poor thing suffer.

@moffittjc that's true, it is a terrible decision but it is also terrible seeing them suffering.

I've had to put down several horses, and we had cats when I still lived at home, and at some point you have to let them go.
It's definitly not my favourite part of having an animal, but knowing when it's over is part of the job IMO.
But I never had to make the decision on international horse day. I don't even know if there is one.

@moffittjc A friend of mine has rescued a parrot. She has a pet for at least 30 years I think, 'cause it's a quite young parrot. So is she just remember to close the door (she forgot it on Thursday) she'll nearly have time to retire before getting a new pet.
There must be an international horse day, filled with carrots and apples. I'm sure international dog day must have been a dog with a lot of balls and sticks.

Next month marks 20 years since Freckles (the dog in my profile picture here) went to Rainbow Bridge. She was 14 and having kidney failure, and I wasn’t going to make her suffer for two weeks for my sake. My brother took her to the vet. I couldn’t. I still owe my brother for doing that for me.

I totally understand how you didn’t want to be there at the end. I really didn’t want to do it either, but my daughter wanted me to be there for emotional support for her.

Pets truly are part of our families, and so very difficult to let go of.

@moffittjc I cried the whole day even when my neighbor had to put to sleep their cat Willy. I played with him every day.

I am so sorry. Losing our pets was devastating. We still mourn the loss of all of our dogs -- 4 in total plus 2 more we had to surrender to the Humane Society.

My daughter and I had a good trip down memory lane yesterday when we were talking about all the pets we have had in our lives, including ones I had before she was even born. It was very therapeutic to just sit and talk about our furry babies and how much we loved them.

@moffittjc Yes. We talk about our dogs all the time. The Pomeranians used to jump in my husband's lap before his behind even hit the chair.

Again I'm so so sorry for your loss. No matter what fur babies grow on us even when we don't think they have.

That’s exactly how I feel right now. If you would have asked me a week ago, I would have told you I disliked that dog immensely. But now, I miss him so much. I wish I could have him back.

Thank you. Pets bring love and joy to families, but also grief and heartbreak. But it is a great reminder that we are all mortal, and I think it is a good learning experience about the cycle of life.

I will sit there and say openly that I never liked the dog, but I'm not going to lie, I miss him terribly and wish he were still here.

Thank you. I know we all hope we never have to do something like this, but since pets have such a shorter lifespan than humans it’s not something we can totally avoid altogether.

I know, I feel the same way. If it were just me, I wouldn't ever have a pet. But when you have children, things are much different. My daughter says now that she doesn't want another dog, but I'm willing to bet that in 6 months to a year we'll be talking about getting another dog.

So sorry. It is never easy. You sound like my hubby with a dog I had. He liked her but admitted after she was gone that he didnt expect to miss her. He called for her for about a week after in the mornings when he let the other dogs out. Healso admitted that he kept looking to run into a brick wall as he walked through the house. She loved to get in front of us and stop. She was a doberman mastiff mix to tell you size and why she was a brick wall
