Antiques in Grass Valley, Western Australia

I’ve made a collage of some of the antique items that were in the house where we stayed for a fortnight. At each end of the mantelpiece over the old fireplace was a vase, one of which I’ve shown in the top left photo. The roses were very well done and the two pieces had no flaws whatsoever. I can’t imagine what they’d be worth. On a shelf below the mantelpiece was the ornate red glass vase shown lower right. It was difficult to get a good photo of it but there was no way I was going to chance dropping it so I just took a photo where it stood. The beautiful basin and jug were in the spare room which also held the child’s pram and a stuffed horse. I’ve never seen an ‘unreal’ horse in such a position but many a time horses will chew in this manner at an itch on their foot.

@JudyEv hopefully you have saved some of her pieces, what a nice thing to hand down generation to generation.

@mom210 Yes, I do have quite a few of her pieces. Here is an ashtray she did of a Qualup Bell.

I especially love the tall one with the roses. My mother used to do china-painting and I know roses were quite hard to do nicely.

There are antiques that I like, but not all. I like the horse, but not a lot all the rest. Mom had an identical pink and white glass basket.

I can't imagine where the horse would have come from. I'll ask them one day,. It's an unusual pose for a stuffed toy.

@JudyEv I have never seen a real horse in that pose, but nothing is impossible.

@LadyDuck They do use their hind foot to scratch behind their ear sometimes and they will also nibble an itch near their hoof.

They're all beautiful pieces and I wouldn't have dared touch them, either. I'm usually not clumsy but there's always a chance I'd drop something.

@JudyEv Oh, yeah. I would have hated damaging anything there. I'm sure you were both careful.

We were always mindful that it wasn't our house so we didn't move anything we didn't need to.

@wolfgirl569 Unusual, isn't it? It seems a bit odd to make one like this.

I probably like the tall vase the best although I liked the basin and jug. It was bigger than it looks here.

I particularly like the tall vase and the jug and basin. The jug and basin don't look very big there but they were quite large.

They would have been common in the olden days. Hopefully someone would bring you warm water in the ewer so you could have a wash.

The owners are now third-generation to live there so a lot of the stuff is very old.

I am trying to work out what the horse is up to! I am guessing that before running water, that jug and bowl would have been common in most houses

The horse is either using his hoof to scratch an itch on his nose or he is nibbling at an itch above his hoof. Those are my theories anyway, The bowl and jug would have been standard items for sure.

They should create a museum out of this old house, all those items would be wonderful to get photos of.

So many places in the UK seem like this where a house has been in a family for several generations so no-one ever needs to get rid of old stuff.
