I Can Be Such a Dummy

Me and my bright ideas. I’ve always wanted to extend our front lawn up to a rock wall on our property that farmers built in the 17th century. I wanted a park-like setting. To make a very long story short, we we received a quote not counting hydro seeding in March. We hoped to get the grass started before the hot weather came, even knowing that autumn is the best time to plant grass. The contractor promised to begin May 1st, but was so busy, he didn’t begin until June. After removing over a quarter acre of trees, excavating the land, dumping tons of soil and then tons of topsoil, the hydro seeding wasn’t completed until June 20th, my birthday. Hubs had no interest in “my” project, so I was the one outside every day telling the tree cutters which trees to leave and which to remove. Many were dead, many were about to die, and many made too much shade. Hubs was livid that I had too many beautiful trees removed. How was I to know what to remove while standing amongst fallen trees and brush with no help? The contractor suggested which should come down, but that was it. As a result, we wound up with weeds and grass, and spent a good 5 hours a day watering since. The contractor stopped by occasionally, but the last time we saw him was for his bill. It was well over twice the original quote. We will no longer use him for tree removal or grass cutting. By the way, he advertises with my son. My son is dropping him as a client.

It was hideous before. We’ve gotten so many compliments on it, and it will be repaired by the landscaper who did our island.

Oh my goodness seeding at the end of June is a terrible idea, because of the weeds. We are having a terrible year for the rain. It does not rain, we almost had no rain at all since the year started. Our lawn is brown, totally burnt. We have water restrictions, so we cannot water the lawn, only the vegetable gardens. I keep the water I use to wash the vegetables to water my flowers. Still waiting for rain.

@DianneN I used the water stored in the rain barrels until I had water, but now the lawn is burnt. The weeds are such an annoying problem.

So true, and we knew that. No rain all summer, except a few drizzles. Most lawns here are burnt out, because we all have wells and don’t want to run them dry. Now, we have the greenest weeds in town

@LadyDuck We had no rain to store Our old lawns get treated for weeds, bugs, and get fertilized, so they look fair, but burnt. We have a different landscaper coming to kill the weeds within the week. Then he will return at the end of September to aerate, slice seed, and fertilize our “new” lawn. We are hoping it will look good by next spring. Fingers crossed.

Yes, he did the job and well, but he said his tree crew were at our property for many more days than expected. He also told us that we were charged $100 extra for the cost of gas for every dump truck load, and there were many more loads than expected. Still, we were ripped off!

That’s why I’m scared to even think about work right now: with inflation spinning like a wheel I’m afraid a quote they give me today will be $2,000 more tomorrow. I’m so thankful I have all the work I need done on the house done: new AC, furnace, crawl space dehumidifier and mold removal, water heater, and roof. I’m so sorry you had a bad experience. I wonder if you could legally hold him to the original quote. It’d probably be more money than it’s worth, though.

He should have. I also should have told him that his workers took 2 hour lunch breaks and 1hour and 40 minute coffee breaks when he wasn’t around. However, it does look gorgeous despite the weeds. The excavator guy did a wonderful job and knew how to slope the land properly. While watering, we’ve met so many neighbors and others taking walks or driving by. They all stopped to tell us how much better the property looks. We made plans to have the weeds killed, fertilizing, aerating, and seed cutting at the end of September with the landscaper who designed and planted our island. He’s coming to kill weeds this week or next. He’s looking for tall ornamental trees to plant along the road area. Yes, even hubs loves how it looks. lol

Wow that does sound like an expensive lesson. Getting hit for 2x the amount is crazy. I hope he just didn't spring it on you and that you knew it was going to cost that much more.

Oh gosh I'm sorry it upset your husband so much. On the other hand if he didn't care about "your" project then ... yeah. That's too bad that the contractor isn't too ethical, twice the amount of the quote and then ending up with weeds

Was there a contract signed between you both about price? I understand prices have skyrocketed in the last while on everything and that may be why the bill was more. My Dad was always one for having signed contracts before any type of work would be done for that very reason. I think he got a higher bill once and he never would have a company do work without a contract first.

No contract - just a handshake between my husband and him. He’s done so much work around here over the years and his company still mows our lawn. However, we have someone new to use after the season. We had a signed contract for our patio, but it turned out larger than expected. The contractor wanted more money, so hubs split the additional cost after telling him he’s the one who actually measured it. Yes, material has gone up tremendously and so has gas, but not as much as we were charged. Glad he’s gone!
