A wash-basin - pretty but not very practical

We are house-sitting on a farm in Grass Valley, Western Australia. There is a small cottage very close to the house and that is where we sleep. There is a shower, toilet, bedroom and small sitting room but no cooking facilities. We mostly live in the main house but shower and sleep in the cottage. We have good internet in the house. The photo shows the bathroom basin which is pretty hopeless if you’re trying to wash your face. These are okay as a toilet wash-basin but not much use otherwise. But I do love the colour of it.

I’m glad they don’t make ‘em like that any more. Nothing but hot out of one tap, nothing but cold out of the other. But that is a lovely color, you’re correct!

I forgot about that bit about separate taps. We did find a plug for it but we haven't used it much. We shower there but if I just want to wash my face, I use the bathroom at the main house.

I love separate taps. I have one of those single mixer taps on my tub and I can never get the temperature right... it's either too hot or too cold.

I remember my surprise the first time I visited the UK. The water came out from the same single tap, but NOT mixed, I could feel the cold water separated from the hot. I hope they evolved in the meantime. This wash basin is too narrow and too "flat", not practical at all.

@JudyEv It's not practical, I hope you have a better one to use.

They haven't progressed a whole lot, often you can feel a ring of one temperature surrounding the other, if you see what I mean. And often there are still separate taps anyway.

We found a plug so you could mix hot and cold in the basin but we haven't needed to use it much.

I remember that the first time I was in Europe, my sister traded her apartment in Lausanne for an ancient house in the middle of nowhere in Belgium for a week during summer. The house had no toilet inside the house and you had to go down the stairs, open the kitchen door walk to the countryside where the wooden toilet was. JEEZZZ!!! I had several such problems in Europe when staying in very old houses.

@JudyEv But how would you use hot and cold together? A central faucet type thingy would have been better.

@DaddyEvil I thought you were just talking about the narrowness of it. The separate hot and cold taps was the first things Vince noticed about it. We did find a plug for it so we could blend water in the basin if we wanted to.

That is so unusual. Can you plug the sink to fill it with both taps?

@noni1959 It's a very small area and a bigger basin wouldn't have fitted (fat??)

Yes, we did find a plug but the basin is so narrow you can't get your face over it to wash it without water going everywhere.

@RubyHawk There is very little room in the bathroom. A bigger sink wouldn't have fitted in the space.

@JudyEv I can see it would be a tight fit. Seems strange that anyone would have such a small sink put in.

It is peculiar looking bathroom basin. Is it made of hard plastic? I wonder why the need for two faucets is it for cold and hot water?

It just a regular basin but it's red. One tap is for hot water and one for cold. I found a plug for the basin as you can mix hot and cold in the basin if you want to.

@JudyEv I see well I gues the shape is a but odd compared to regular basins that have a wider not longer one.

@rsa101 Because it's so narrow, you can't help but get water on the floor.

@judyev We used to have one of those with silly dimensions, but in boring old white. Whoever designed such useless items has obviously never tried to wash his face before. Excellent colour.

So true and we couldn't find a plug the first day so it was either cold water or really hot water.
