Does our planet really need us?

A recent post by a friend of mine @Fleura about our exploration of space got me thinking. Does our planet really need us? It seems that the human race have done nothing but damage this planet very nearly to the point of its destruction and is responsible for wiping out lots of species (and many more on the brink of disappearing). In any ecosystem we know of a bloom of one particular organism always causes problems for every other organism in that ecosystem and surely no-one can deny that the human race has bloomed almost to the point of insanity!
Speaking logically and considering humans as nothing special, just another species living on Earth, wouldn't it be better for every other species and the planet as a whole if we simply disappeared? That, at least, would allow our Earth to renew itself and restore the balance of nature which we have severely disrupted.
See the original post here
Why are we (humans) wasting time and resources on space exploration, looking particularly for signs of life in the solar system and elsewhere in the galaxy,...

It could happen though and it will be caused by something that nobody has ever thought of, so we will not be prepared in any way for it.

Without a nuclear war, I don't see the human race going extinct any time soon. Even if we found another planet to move to, a large percent of the human race would refuse to leave.
I think Mother Nature has been trying to pare down the human race for quite some time but the doctors/scientists have gotten a lot better at keeping us going.

@porwest Maybe... I do think we're doing more to the planet than the dinosaurs ever thought about doing. But I also think the planet runs in cycles and we're just speeding the next cycle up. The earth always goes through warming and freezing trends that last hundreds of thousands to millions of years. No reason for that to change, as far as I know.

@DaddyEvil I don't even buy the speeding things up part. I go back to even the industrial revolution. We had NO controls and NO regulations and NO concern for climate back then, and we did more polluting than we ever did.
Now we have LESS pollution but more dire consequences? It makes no sense.
It is politics and control and green agendas and nothing more that drives this debate. And yes, it is also about money. It has nothing to do with the environment.
Even when you think about it, why did they have to change what they called it to climate change from global warming? Because there was no evidence of actual warming and the last hottest day on record was more than 20 years ago.
Even with THAT, there is no evidence of higher numbers of storms such as hurricanes and tornadoes and typhoons, and no evidence of a higher frequency of any of those either.
They said in the 80s that The Great Barrier Reef was dying and would be gone today, and a year ago CNN reported it is healthier than ever and EXPANDING. It's just a bunch of gobbledygook. But people still fall for it. Because more people don't pay attention to facts than do, and more people tend to be sheep than not.
For all of our intelligence, people are easily herded.

I keep thinking it is such a naive thing to think that humans can control climates or weather or that what we do impacts it. To me, THAT is the irony. We are trying to find a reason behind natural forces and for whatever reason, are assigning the blame to us, rather than follow the real science which would show us, quite clearly...
We are victims of natural forces. Just like the dinosaurs.

All what is required is for an individual to take care of their surroundings and the world will survive. I am doing my bit

Thinking of humanity and all they damage, it is sickening.

Of course our planet doesn't need us! The planet is just a lump of rock. When people talk of 'saving the planet' what they really mean is 'saving us' or perhaps 'saving conditions suitable for human life'. Without humans all the other species on Earth (estimated to be some 8.7 million, not counting single-celled organisms) would be just fine!

I simply call poppycock. The planet is influenced by umm...planetary things. Ask the dinosaurs about what they think about humans destroying the planet. Wait, humans weren't around, but natural forces wiped them all out.
If we think, as humans, we are so powerful to influence the world around us...
Perhaps we are NOT the most intelligent species on the planet after all. Because we have nothing to do with any of it.

I often wonder what would happen if the Human Race was to suddenly disappear. Nature would definitely take over and some other species would be at the top of the food chain.
