A spa bath in our hotel

In our new house in the lifestyle village, most things are geared to elderly people. There are no steps and even the passage is wide enough for a wheelchair and a helper. The bathroom is big enough to take a wheelchair and the shower space large enough for a shower chair. However, it seems short-sighted that they didn’t put in grab rails. There is no bath. Our previous house had a bath and a spa and now I’m regretting that we didn’t make more use of them. I was always a bit concerned about how much water I was using if I ran a deep bath. In our hotel in Melbourne, there was a lovely big spa so we took the opportunity to have a long soak in it. As you can see, it was quite luxurious and easily big enough for us both.

Our last house only had a shower stall. When we moved into this house, Pretty and I took baths for the first week and then switched back to showering. I might have taken four or five baths since we moved here four years ago. Pretty takes baths every once in a while.

@JudyEv Exactly! We have both now and neither one of us takes a bath very often. We prefer showers. But, we have the option if we choose to use it.

When we had the bath, we rarely used it but I guess knowing we had the option was nice.

I have always liked more to take a bath than a shower, particularly during winter.

@JudyEv It depends on the size, our external Jacuzzi contains 850 litres of water. A medium size bathtub should be from 200 to 280 litres.

@LadyDuck Did you use the jacuzzi much? They are quite popular here too.

Mostly I was too impatient to wait while the bath filled and it did seem to take a lot of water.

I switched my old water tank that held 40 gallons to a small energy conservative unit that can only give me 7 gallons of hot water at any one time. Needless to say baths are out not to mention I usually run out of hot water before the dishes are done. I wanted to have lower electric bills but now I wish I had that old water tank back.

Seven gallons doesn't sound a lot. Sometimes it's nice to be able to soak in a bath.

I might be able to do that when it gets hot enough this June, at least when it's hot I can languish in a lukewarm bath

@rebelann Yes, if the weather's really hot, the bath doesn't need to be quite so hot.

It was much bigger than the one we had at our previous house. You could really stretch out.

@judyEv There is only a shower in the house we have our eye on, but the bathroom is big enough to replace the shower cubicle with a bath while retaining the shower over the bath. It’s always nice to the option of a long soak when that’s called for.

Having the shower over the bath is a good option if there isn't room for separate facilities.

@JudyEv That day has come for me. The best I can do is the hot tub at the pool. I return to the pool after the first of the year. It's good you're taking advantage of it while you can.

The one day will come when I won't be able to get in and out of a spa safely so I thought I should take advantage of it.

I'm surprised about the grab bars and no tub. We looked at getting a walk-in tub. They wanted $20,000. lolololololol

That is a huge amount of money. I'm not sure how they work - how you're able to walk into them.

@JudyEv It wouldn't allow me to copy any pictures. There is a door on the side of the tub which seals very well. You walk over the low lip, shut the door and lock it.

That looks grand. I love baths so I would not be anywhere that didn't have a tub. I also love showers so I find the combo units the best.

I think combo units are ideal. At least you have the option then as to whether you have a bath or a shower.

I don't understand about there being no grab bars. That is a super stupid oversight. When we had our bottom bathroom done over we had the workers install one by the upstairs toilet. I think we need more put into the bottom bathroom, too. Just in case, you know?

I'm surprised they weren't compulsory in here. Some of the people are quite infirm and subject to falling over. Falling in a bathroom can be very dangerous.
