When things pop out I don’t mean to say

My husband said he has to buy the dog different food for her fat a**. I said that isn’t a nice way to say it to just say I need to buy new food for our little dog. I said we don’t want our daughter going to school someday and calling someone fat or calling her friend April Fatso. He asked why I would even say that and I started giggling and told him a story of when I was young… I’m not sure how old I was mid elementary school years is all I recall. I was at the town carnival with my parents. My friend ran up to me and asked me to ride a ride with her. I turned to my mother and asked if I could ride the ride with April Fatso. Of course that wasn’t really her last name. I’m sure I didn’t mean to say what I was thinking out loud. I can imagine how mortified my parents were and how awful that poor kid felt. I wouldn’t have even wanted to ride a ride after that if I was her but I know we did. Photo is unrelated to the discussion and is of my green bottle collection (and the oldest bottle I own which is the boot one).

@snowy22315 I saw her probably 15 years later and asked if she remembered me and she did and remembered my name. I did not want to ask if she remembered what I said about her

You remember that old rhyme we had as a “comeback,” “Sticks and stones may break my bones but named will never hurt me.” Total B.S. Yes, it hurt. I was bullied all the time in school when I was a kid. That’s why my junior high school was so precious to me: there was no bullying there!

@Fourwalls I’m so sorry you had to deal with bullying too. I was bullied terrible through pretty much 6th to 12th grade. Yeah I agree about that saying. That’s why mental abuse in relationships can have such long lasting effects just like physical abuse can.

@FourWalls I can recall the faces and names of the ones who bullied me. That’s such a nice way to look at it

@shaggin — ah, it was long ago. I don’t even remember their names or their faces. I have had more than my share of blessings to compensate.

Kids will do that no matter how hard parents try not to say stuff they wouldn't want them to say, kids hear other kids and then they pick it up from them.

@rebelann my kids never called anyone names like that it wasn’t a word we used in this house and wasn’t allowed. They probably did learn it at school but as far as I know we’re always kind about things like that. My upbringing was very different than how I raised my kids.

@rebelann ahh that’s understandable the older generations some definitely were very racist. It’s good your mother wasn’t. My parents are the type to say Im not racist but… then go on to say clearly something very racist

I was raised in the 1950s and some of the things I heard dad say I'd repeat and now I wish I hadn't learned all that, he was a racist but at least mom was not so that helped but only a little, you know how kids pick things up and their parents usually don't know what they're saying while they're in school, mom didn't that's for sure.

@shaggin Most of the time, I'd rather them tell me to my face what they think. And other times, I don't care what they think as long as they do what I suggest...

That was rather mean. Thanks for the laugh. My daughter got into trouble early on with her Sunday school teacher when she called a donkey an a--. Truth from the mouths of babes.

@sallypup I’m glad it made people chuckle. I laugh when I think about it and feel absolutely terrible at the same time. I sure hope the poor girl doesn’t remember it. My husband and his father bred dogs for so long they refer to the females as b**ches. I hate hearing my husbands say that. It may be the correct term but the baby is going to go around calling people that and the school nor I will like it.

@shaggin Thanks so much! I have thought of you often and wondered how you and the kids were doing. I was so darn busy for such a long time that I couldn’t devote time here. I’m trying y best to myLot again. I missed being here and thought of my friends so often. Hopefully, that girl forgot about what you said. If not, perhaps she went on a diet.

@Judyev when my husband and stepson were gutting the walls in our dining room my son found this boot bottle, another bottle that I tossed due to it having lathe and plastic debris stuck to it that I couldn’t remove, and an old quill pen holder.

@CarolDm I do not as an adult. If it’s in a book I read to my kids I get rid of the book. I hate the things my husband says he should have learned raising one child how to do things right the next time around but he hasn’t.

@RebeccasFarm I definitely didn’t say it to be hurtful and I don’t think I even realized what I said until my mother told me later. When I think things they tend to come out and I don’t even realize it. I do feel bad though after all these years over it. I really hope she doesn’t remember it.
