Why do people tell lies? What are 'necessary' lies and wicked lies?
I would say 'necessary' lies are told to get oneself out of trouble or to avoid a catastrophe.
Wicked lies are aimed at getting someone in trouble , defamation of character etc, etc.
Then there are lies people tell about their ownselves aimed at making themselves seem bigger than they are, richer than they are, nicer than they are etc, etc.
However we look at it, a lie is a lie, but we can argue that some are necessary lies what do you think?

The worst lies are the ones you tell yourself. It's nothing. I'll be okay. I feel better.
Lies to shield another's feelings from harm are usually acceptable but even then, it could cause more harm than good.

Yes. I have been away.
I had been lying to myself.
I'm slowly recovering from some major surgeries. I get to go home in 8 weeks.
So very nice to see you :)

You are so right. Some people lie to themselves in order to avoid facing up to problems , especially with health issues and love relations.
A lie to shield someone from harm cannot be a good move. If that person is in danger it is best they know in order to take the necessary steps to protect themselves.
It has been a long time. So happy to see you.

@Kandae11 That goes without saying. Mother and father used to go for a movie but tell us they were going to see a doctor (lol) My husband told me a lie. He said what I cooked was nice but not to cook that again

@allknowing. Ha ha, the truth was actually - the rice was not nice, but he did not want to hurt your feelings.

Honesty is best, but not always possible if peace is to be kept, I guess.

Why is it a necessary lie to get yourself out of trouble? The honest thing to do would be to admit it and take the consequences.

A lie can change the set of events in one´s and others´ lives. When we tell lies to other people, any positivity that could have developed is not achieved. If the lie is uncovered, another set of events is developed; this time, causing distress and grief

@Kandae11 Most of the time it does. Like you said a lie is a lie. This world would be a better world without lies

There are also "social lies" that we tell to help someone feel better about themselves or to keep from wounding a fragile ego that might not handle the truth well.

@Kandae11 Yes, I agree... Little white lies don't hurt anyone and may be good from their perspective.

True. We lie to dying patient that he is going to live as we don't want a patient die before his time. However lying to defame or exploit someone is really vicious.

For me, I know two kinds or types of lie. Regular lie to destroy and a white lie to save others.
A white lie is best exemplified in the Bible. Sarah was the wife if Abraham but Abraham lied to the Egyptians that Sarah wasn't his wife or else he would be killed.

I can honestly say I have never lied.
Honesty is always the best policy.
When we speak the truth, we don't have to remember what we say.
I have been a victim of lies and deception and I have always wondered what was the need except to gain some short-term gains. I did suffer but I also made doubly sure never to follow their evil lifestyle.

Well I guess some lies are for a purpose , some lie because they want to avoid conflicts and confrontations . Others do it to save someone specially if that someone is in great danger. But what I hate are the people who lie just to cover up their wrong doing and for fake news too. They do this to make themselves different from other people , to save face and to pretend.
