How do you wash?

Forgive me if this question is too personal – but of course you don’t have to answer. The other day I was chatting to a (Romanian) friend about other people’s houses and differing standards of cleanliness. I was telling her that we once stayed with a friend who obviously didn’t have much of a clue about housework. When I went to the bathroom in the morning to have a shower, I quickly decided that I couldn’t bring myself to actually use the shower as it was so dirty. And as there was no plug in the washbasin I couldn’t even have a wash either! ‘Oh!’ she exclaimed, ‘Is that what a plug is for?’ Sometimes something that you think is self-evident turns out not to be obvious to other people at all. ‘Don’t you ever put water in the basin to wash with?’ I asked. ‘No’, she replied. ‘So do you have a shower or bath every day?’ – also no. ‘So what do people do in between times, don’t they ever have a wash with a flannel/washcloth?’ She explained that sometimes they did wash by just running the water and splashing it around – and then cleaning up the mess in the bathroom afterwards. Personally I have a wash every morning. I fill the washbasin with warm water then use a flannel to wash whatever I consider to be the necessary areas. I only have a shower or bath once or twice a week unless I’ve been doing anything to make myself particularly dirty. So what do you do? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

I use a washcloth, soap and warm water but don't plug the sink. We rarely take baths so only have a hair catcher in the drain in the tub/shower stall. (There IS a plug, we just took it out and put it above the shower head.) I shower every other day, usually in the afternoon. I rarely do enough during the day to warrant a shower every day. We have asked for cleaning supplies and cleaned the shower/tub in motels we've stayed at.

@Fleura Of course I leave the water running. We've talked about that before.

So do you just dampen the washcloth to use, and then rinse it under running water? Do you leave the water running?

@DaddyEvil I thought we had. Doesn't that just waste a lot of water?

Same as @DaddyEvil, Before going to sleep, I use a washcloth, soap and warm water but don't plug the sink. I take a bath one or two times a week but I shower every morning.

@Fleura No, I do not let the water running, I wet the washcloth and I open the water to rinse and wash another area, I like to use clean water, not soapy water.

@Fleura We do not have a bath tub. I stand and bathe and when I have travelled abroad I never used the bath tub in hotels

@Fleura He does not...no time left to wash the body...whatever water splashes may be deemed sufficient like a fountain.

I like personal questions...good for gossiping. Evil Grin. Ok...seriously, our water is hard water...so stains and marks are inevitable. The bathrooms, and buckets do look scaled. The building secretary wants to install water softner...I will let you know when you can come to my place... I shower twice per week...Monday and Thursday...feels good....no I too do not plug the washbasin...

We have hard water here too, it does make it more difficult to keep everything clean.

Oh yes I didn't even ask about hand-washing! We wash our hands every time we come in from anywhere (work, school, shopping etc.), every time we handle an animal, before preparing food, after handling any greasy or sticky food (or other things like paint, glue) and of course after using the toilet. I think perhaps we do it more than most. Maybe I should ask about that too!

How funny. I happened on a rubber bathtub plug when I was in the grocery store today. We've been at this house for almost a year and never could find a plug for the clawfoot tub.

Did you buy it? Did it fit? They seem to come in an annoying range of sizes so you can never be sure!

I take a quick shower every morning after exercise and before going "out" to dinner. I usually take a bath every night before sitting with hubs in the evening when we are up north and I have more time to relax and have a good soak.

I need to wash my face with soap and water as soon as I get up. I don't normally put the plug in, just turn the water on and off as need be. I shower almost every day and wash my hair about twice a week. I think the weather is hotter here so showering more often would be common.

@Fleura No. You wet your face and your arms. Turn off the faucet while you soap. After soaping turn on the faucet, then rinse.

I wash with the plug in the sink, maybe they do things differently where your friend comes from. I can remember going on holiday where we stayed in a small self catering flat. This flat was supposed to be cleaned after each family but the shower area was disgusting and we cleaned it ourselves before using it. This was annoying because the cleaning was supposed to be included in the price. However the rest of the rooms were clean enough , so maybe their cleaner just forgot the shower or perhaps she ran out of time, because they are probably not given enough time to do it properly.

A different friend told me that if she was staying at a friend's house and she didn't fancy the bathroom, she would look around for cleaning materials and clean it before using it. And if she couldn't find any, she would go and ask the host. I have definitely cleaned other people's bathrooms but I wouldn't have the nerve to actually go and ask for things to clean with!
