With the end of winter many vegetables are not found in the market.

February 27, 2023 5:33am CST
Spring has arrived in Calcutta. Winter has gone. Many of the vegetables which were found in the winter disappeared from the market like radish, cauliflower, peas, palak spinach, to name a few. The vegetables of summer will arrive in few weeks like ladies finger, drumsticks, neem leaves, jackfruits, yam, to name a few.

Your "Winter" crops are our Summer crops. Your Summer crops also grow well in our Summer weather. (I've found that I have to plant spinach in the early Spring to get a crop of it, though. It bolted since we had extremely hot weather here all Summer last year. All I could do was pull it up and hope it does better this year.)

@sathviksouvik Yes, that's true. If it's too hot, a lot of them can't grow. I always plant tomatoes in my flowerbed but last year it was too hot for them until Fall and then the tomatoes had lots of fruit for me to eat.

Aren't we all? Raw mangoes are in the market but still quite pricey. If you search online. you'll find a few online retailers selling mangoes. How original they are, I know not.

@Icydoll I too love mango pickles. One can make it at home but it's not that hot yet. It will need solid sunshine to ripen for a few days. Right now I'm using raw mangoes in salads drinks and food. We can make picked from ripe mangoes too. Which mango is your favorite? I like Alphonso best but there are some good ones too. I'm thinking of making Amchoor that's mango powder at home. have you ever tried, making powders? During the lockdown, I couldn't find dried ginger powder anywhere so decided to make my own..

We get all the veggies throughout the year, but they taste better when in season. And I prefer to buy my veggies according to the season. Raw mangoes have started coming here and today I made chutney with it. And today I got amla and that might be the last purchase of amla for this season.

thanks Arunimaji you are an excellent gardener. Your kitchen garden has all the vegetables like brinjal cauliflower. It is amazing in Bengaluru all vegetables are available all round the year. In Calcutta we are not getting ladies fingers. It was not available from November to January.

@sathviksouvik I think that since Bengaluru has a good moderate temperature throughout the year, veggies might grow here all the time. We get everything except seasonal fruits like Nagpur oranges, strawberries, mango, litchi etc throughout the year. But then the taste differs. I prefer to stick to the seasonal veggies as per the season in North India. My garden does produce good amount of veggies but still we need to buy a lot of vegetables from the market.

@arunima25 thanks Arunimaji in Calcutta now we are getting summer vegetables. They are also big in number like raw bananas, ladies finger, yam, bottle guord, bitter guord. My wife and mother cooks a beautiful shukto with brinjals, raw bananas, bitter guord and drum stick.

We have got lots of empty shelves in some of our shops! There is a shortage of fruit and vegetables due to "adverse weather conditions."

I noticed many empty shops when I went shopping last week. I shopped in the Co-op but I have heard that it is the same everywhere.
