A walled garden to die for

On our previous visits to Ireland and the British Isles, we’ve seen several examples of walled gardens but the walled garden at Kylemore Abbey surpasses anything I had seen before. It comprises roughly 6 acres and is divided into two by a mountain stream. It once boasted 21 heated glasshouses and employed 40 gardeners. After Mitchell Henry sold the property, the garden fell into disrepair until the Benedictine nuns resurrected (pardon the pun) some of it as a working garden supplying fruit and vegetables for the congregation of nuns and the girls’ school. The walls are of Scottish red brick and Irish granite. The brick absorbs the heat during the day and the espaliered apple and pear trees welcome the extra warmth from the walls. Espaliered trees are those pruned and trained to grow flat against a support. The walls also protect the garden from wind, frost and marauding sheep. In the photo, you can see one of the glasshouses in the distance and hopefully the fruit trees espaliered along the walls.

Not heard of espaliered before, but now I know what it is. There is walled garden not far from me. On my next walk I shall have to pop and see about the trees, though I am pretty sure it is a kitchen garden

I wondered about espaliered. Some of the orchards in Donnybroook were espaliered. It made the fruit easier to pick, the trees were easier to prune too.

@Ronrybs True but I think a lot of it was about getting extra warmth from the brick walls.

@JudyEv I guess the trees took up less space in the garden, so room for other goodies

It's beautiful. I wish I had the funds to build a rock wall around my yard.

It would be lovely to have a big wall around your garden.

Now here is another idea I could have used when I had a large garden, Always seemed hard to keep nosy neighbors from looking and so on. With a brick wall around it we could have been totally shut off from the world,

@Fleura I wonder if you'll find it changed. Most of the roads probably won't be any wider.

Thanks for that. There are some magnificent photos in that lot. I needed to get higher to show the garden layout better but I'll put up what I've got later. So do you feel a trip to ireland coming on?

I can hardly think how much it would cost to build walls like that. But when a garden gets that big, I can't help but think that the benefits of the walls must be reduced?

@JudyEv Yes the warm walls would still be beneficial.

That would seem logical but the warmth factor at least would still come into play.

I have lots more photos but I don't want to make a collage as you can't see the detail so easily.

It’s a beautiful place. Are the fruit trees those scrawny branches on this side of the fence or the tall trees on the other side of the fence? I like the forest in the above ground.

I've cropped the photo so hopefully you can see the fruit trees against the wall. The trees beyond are natural woodland.

@JudyEv Thanks, the fruit look frail and small according to our fruit trees. Maybe they aren’t grown yet.

Lovely but so big! I think of walled gardens as being somewhat smaller.

I absolutely loved the garden. Last time we were here they had only just started the renovation but it's well advanced now.
