Does that make sense? This picture is of some flowers Diana, my dad's wife, is growing in their backyard. She spends hours out there working on her garden, and she seems to have gained that interest from her late mother. I once spent every free moment of my time reading, which I got from my own late mother. As an adult, she didn't have much time to read anything not related to something she was working on, but she did love it. She said she even read out loud to my sister and me when she was pregnant with us. I appreciate that she did.
So tell me, who got you interested in what you are interested?

My mom read to my youngest brother and I all the time. She said I learned to read standing at her knees because I thought she was leaving parts of the stories out... (She mostly read whatever she was interested in reading instead of childrens' books although she also read some of those. I guess it didn't really matter if she left parts out. We didn't understand what she read, anyway.)
She's also the one who got me hooked on plants... She gave my youngest brother and I seeds and a small area to make our own garden. I've always loved plants and books.

@AmbiePam Thanks. I like learning about almost anything. That's the reason I can, usually, help people with problems with their electronics, too. I got interested when I got the job in the Walmart Electronics Department and have kept up with the newer electronics/programming.

Very lovely flowers. Both my parents had graduated from university and my dad was a famous Latvian writer and poet. So as soon as I learned to read I got a library card and tried to read my way through the library. By age 8 I was writing bits of poetry in both Latvian and English. Now I still have a love for reading, writing, and poetry.

@AmbiePam thank you. The most I have done is to publish two books of poetry. Other than that my online writing and my poetry speak for themselves,

Such beautiful flowers and in different colors too.
My late mother used to tell us stories when I was a kid. The stories were products of her vivid imagination. I guess if she went into writing, she would have written great novels. Her imagination was so fervid and "wild". She also composed songs for school activities.
So, that got me interested in reading. I was in the primary grades when I started reading Nancy Drew novels. When I was in high school, I was already reading Barbara Cartland, Danielle Steel, Leon Uris, Stephen King, and all the great authors. I started writing then for our school paper and participated in short story writing contests where I usually won first prize.
In college, I tend to choose books that were unique, so I ventured into sci-fi, mystery, war, and crime stories. I wrote more and sent my short stories to local magazines and many won prizes and were accepted for publication. That's when I dreamt of becoming a novelist.
To cut the story short, life has a different plan for me though because I fell in love and married at the early age of 20, so all my dreams were placed on the back burner as I struggled to work and take care of my family.
I stopped reading and wrote only on my blogs which I made as outlets for my hidden dreams.
When the kids got older, I started writing a novel, and I am having a hard time now because my vocabulary has grown stagnant due to a lack of reading. I keep using the same words and my grammar sucks. But I still didn't give up on my dream.
So, there you are. sorry in advance for any errors.

It is amazing that you think your vocabulary has lagged in recent years, and I guess you would know best, but it surely doesn't seem that way. I do wish you could have continued your writing career, but I know you wouldn't trade your family for anything. You are obviously very talented, and you can tell just by how you engage on Mylot. I truly mean that.

@AmbiePam Thank you for your kind words. But nowadays, I find errors in my verb-subject agreements, etc, etc, which I rarely commit during the old days. Anyway, you're one of the people here, who inspires and motivates me a lot. I greatly appreciate you.

Now, that's a loaded question.
I'm a writer. I've been writing since I was eight. I started for two reasons. One, I saw an episode of Big Valley that I didn't like and told myself I could write it better. I still hate that episode. The other reason I write is because I needed an escape from the world. My mother wasn't the nicest person in the world and I needed someone to love me, even if it was make-believe.

I don’t know. I’ve always loved reading but I’m the only one in my family that loves books. My son that passed away was a reader, the only one of my three sons.I like writing poetry and painting, my grandson is a writer and loves books. He also likes painting. I used to sew practically all my clothing and the boys shirts but I haven’t lately.

I’m glad you still root for them. Are you looking forward to the coming season? I got into football too because of my dad. Sadly, that means I’m a Cowboys fan. Jerry Jones drives us nuts. But boy did we root for the Commanders when Alex Smith was QB for them. Talk about a trooper.

What got my interested in crocheting is my depression. I needed to get out of it and there was a yarn and a hook somewhere in the house. And since then I got more yarns and many more hooks and I've created so many projects.

That is so sweet.
I always read to our son, even before he was born.
He read at a very young age, I'd like to think that I had a little something to do with that.
I love gardening, flowers in particular.
I remember spending hours outside in my Gramma's front flower bed with her. She would teach me the names of all of the flowers and how this flower should not be a neighbour to that flower and why.
I also love baking apple pies. The peeling of the apples takes me back to time spend in Gramma's kitchen as she would show me how to hold that sharp paring knife in her hand safely and peel the apples.
She could do just about anything and I would join in with her.
Some people just have that effect on other people.
I love to dance.
My Dad would come into the kitchen and stand me facing him and put my feet on his shoes and he would whirl me around the kitchen dancing. It was the most fun any girl could ask for.
He and my Gramma were always my favorite human beings on this earth, I always considered myself lucky because of them.

@Juliaacv Julia, that is astonishing! They should have a book written about their lives. They were such accomplishment people, and I know you have such a wonderful legacy.
I can picture your twins chancing with your husband. They probably look at him adoringly...

@AmbiePam You are too kind.
We used to go to dinner dances in the church basement until we moved to the city 6 years ago.
We love dancing.
He has the twins dancing every day in the kitchen.
My Grandparents were older when they married, my Gramma was 40 and yet she went on to have 5 healthy children. She also raised a nephew about the age of her second child, when her sister-in-law suffered from depression. Joe lived with my Grandparents and their kids for a little over 2 years, during which time my Gramma had 2 more children. There was nothing that they wouldn't do for their family, maybe I get that strong belief in family focus from my Dad and his Mom.

I think I got my love of singing from my grannie. She was never hesitant about singing a solo in church, usually just with the hymn book, standing in her place and no music. The first time I remember singing was in Siloam church (the one that burned last year.) I was about five, sang Jesus Loves Me while an older gentleman in the church played his violin.

@1creekgirl The past week was painful for my back, but this weekend it has held up well. And quite frankly, thinking about what you go through helps me remember to be thankful. You handle your health problems with such grace, and I want to be like that.

@AmbiePam I'm a little stronger. Going to Urologists Tuesday for consultation or maybe remove theses two kidney stones and stent. Then first day of radiation on Wednesday.
How's your back feeling? I pray you can get some relief.

My parents bought me folk music records since I was four. I would figure out the chord progressions on our piano. Then my dad took me to baseball games since I was six. I am a decent musician now, and played baseball in both high school and college. Do parents influence their children? Hmm.

I think many of the interests I enjoy I can attribute to others whether parents or friends. I enjoy doing crossword puzzles, going to the beach and gardening. I got that interest from my mom. I like playing and watching golf. That I got from my dad. Baseball, chess and tennis I can attribute to watching it on TV and trying it. Currently, pickleball, from my brother.

I enjoy photography and it first started with sunsets many years ago. My hobby has flourished and I rarely leave home without my camera any more. Thankfully now my iPhone has a great camera, a lot easier to carry around as compared to my heavy Nikon I used for years. These blooms are pretty. I also started my garden to have in memory of Dustin, calling it Dustin's garden, of course. And it has grown each year as well.

I never did much until I retired. I raised six children and that kept me busy plus working full time. I worked in retail and was interested in making money. So I was interested in buy things real cheap and selling them at the flea market and later on selling on ebay. I love selling things and making money from the sales.

I am also a bookworm. I prefer reading classic and contemporary novels. I love books by Victoria Holt, Charles Dickens, and Charlotte Bronte. Among contemporary authors, I like Mitch Albom, Paulo Coelho, and Stephenie Meyer. Growing up, my father would always tell us how important it is to be a wide reader. He told me that the late Senator Miriam Santiago and other successful people he look up to are voracious readers. I can also vividly remember my father reading the broadsheet aloud every morning.

Most of my interests I came into in my own, like writing, nature hikes, reading, theatre...etc. But it was my mother who got me into music, cooking and gardening. She was a singer/songwriter as well as a nurse, and she would get me to help her with cooking and gardening.
